Sick And Tired Of Shitty Software "Updates" - Are You?

You want to know what really pisses me off, what makes my forehead veins bulge, what pops that last blood vessel in my head that will be the end of me??? Software designers who release updates to their software that are not completely tested. I don't mean those that have a couple of bugs that are only present if you happen to run an unlikely combination of software, I mean the bugs that mean the majority of users are left with damaged or unusable versions of software that they have paid for (pirates need not apply for pity), all because they regularly update their software (a usually important thing to do).

In the past 3 or 4 days I have updated two major programs - Nero 7 Premium and Apple iTunes & Apple Quicktime combo, and both had issues that required me to search user forums to find a easy TEMP fix until a proper update come out (in the case of iTunes & Quicktime combo), or more sinisterly the case of the Nero 7 Premium update making me spend literally 5 hours or so downloading new install files, uninstalling the program, reinstalling (4 or 5 times), e-mailing tech support, etc...

The fact that I am pretty much back to where I started isn't the point, I wasted my time on that. There 2 issues are not just my machine or installation, the overwhelming majority of iTunes users all have the same or similar issues, and I presume it's the same with Nero.

Hey arseholes - Beta test your potential updates FULLY before tricking us into updating - don't try to keep up with what you perceive to be the standard if you can't do it successfully.

The latest updates to Ubuntu Dapper Drake completely incapacitated lots of peoples Windowing systems, leaving them only able to access the machine from the command line.

What went wrong with your iTunes and Quicktime upgrades. They worked fine on the G5s at work. The only problems I've had with Quicktime have revoled around Quicktime screwing around with an attempted install of Adobe CS 2 (at least on the Windows side.)

take great open source software like Firefox or OpenOffice for example. Firefox was an easy choice since it's Extremly stable compared to explorer and when it does crash (which is 1000 times less often than explorer or less) it doesn't take down the whole computer with it.

I have to say I took a while before deciding to finally change to OpenOffice (the release of version 2.0 did it for me) but now I hardly ever even think about microsoft office suite. Of course it might have something to do with the fact that I use mathematical equations a lot and the open office have shitloads better equation editor...

now do I need to get started on Linux? (damn it we need pingu smilies)

Dapper went south for 6 hours , and only if you upgraded on the tuesday , as they had accidently released an up grade ..well by accident ..

the fix was simple , reinstall x server

other than that , one , 2 clics software works over here in Linux ..

I have been using Linux since July and am happy

The only reason I have windows now is because of Acad and UkTV both prefer windows and Hindernet Hexplorer

Its not software designers who decide when to stop testing.

If it was then testing would never end because all good software engineers assume a program is never bug free.

Its the people who have to decide how much money they are willing to chuck at it that make those decisions.

At the end of the day they make decisions based on what their clients pay for. Customers aren't willing to pay a premium for extended testing so they don't get it.

I fuckin hope it wouldn't :-) Ohfurchristsakes... it was a pisstake. Mallocate and strcat to your hearts content. Extra kudo's if you do it in 6502c assembler.

Anyway, pretty much anything compiles if you use enough preprocessor directives :-)

On another note, I've been off linux for a while and just went to recompile my kernel for the first time since I installed gentoo linux on my system... (Athlon 64 dual core) OOooooooo.... What used to take me almost 30 minutes or more on Intel Pentium 4 years ago only took me 8 minutes!!!!! nice........
