Years ago when I was a wee fella of 12 or so my parents had a craving to do the lifestyle block self sufficent thing, but instead of a nice block near town we moved out to the arse end of nowhere (Rangiwahia).

It seems a couple of young juvenile delinquents broke out of borstal (or whatever the fuck they call it now) down welly ways somewhere, stole a car and headed north. They headed up SH54, which used to keep going up through rangi and coming out onto SH1 just north of Mangaweka (rather than down by Vinegar Hill as it does now I believe). Somewhere in the hills between Kimbolton and Rangi their stolen car ran out of gas, and they ditched it. They made there way to a nearby farm and stole a truck. The cockie heard his truck being nicked, and made a few phone calls. There arnt that many roads out of the area and soon enough the car was found and 2 carloads of irate cockies with a small arsenal of firearms were chasing the stolen truck through the gorge. Apparently the lads in the truck lost control and wiped out after a few warning shots scared the crap out of them, and apon exiting the crashed truck found at least half a dozen firearms pointing towards them.
