It will be a pain for most p2p users unless you start your big file downloads after midnight and before 4pm. Probably been giving pressure from movie\music companys to try and cut down on piracy etc.
I'm happy with my 10gig limit plan. I seem to stretch it to 14gigs most months. On my current plan it just slows to dialup once I reach my limit. I don't go hard until the last three days. It's great downloading the lastest tv shows without ads.

Its just the last gasp of a dying company... Over here as i have said I am on a national speed of 35mbps and a international of 2 mbps

( the cheating baskets advertise 100 mbps ) its only when u sign up do you find out !

This is unlimited , with NO slowing due to traffic ,,,( there might be but every time I check its always 16 to 20 % at the server) and I cant tell if it gets slow

said it once say it again the basic infrastructres should never be privatized or the common man gets

im keen on seeing what Orcon have to offer when the un-bundling happens .. would be nice to get Cable like have back home .. but i doubt that NZ's Infrastructure can take much more than it already has in its pipes ..

from the switches its all good to have the fiber optic lines but once you move away from the trunk its just 30 year old copper

Hmmm, I am a new convert... almost

Unfortunately I am stuck with Orcon's former "unlimited" plan until next March.

    From the xtra site:

..That means we will transfer you into the Fair Use Pool where you will share a fixed amount of bandwidth with other users in this pool. You will remain in the Fair Use Pool for 1 week.

Should your usage remain high for sustained periods of a month or more then we may contact you to discuss moving you to a more suitable plan...

They are giving us "uncapped" access btu if we use anything near it they will put you in a limited bandwidth pool, and if yous tay inthat pool for more than a month they will cut your account off.

Its still lightyears from being true uncapped DSL. If they want to be at all competive by global standards, we need unrestrained downstream, 1mb+ or uncapped upstream, no traffic management, no leecher bandwidth pools, no peak time restrictions, for under NZD$40 a month.

I still want to move to HK and get 100mb/sec duplex with no data restrictions for about NZD$50 a month :-(

Orcon will hopefully have new plans within a week or two. If they dont they will heamorage (sp?) customers and they know it.

I'm on the Orcon 256k/40gb (formerly uncapped) but I have no locked in contract so I'm quite happy to jump ship anytime.. I jumped ship from Ihug after 8 years when Ihug ditched there flatrate plans and have no huge loyalty to any ISP these days. I will go where the best leech plans are.

why move to faster plans when my exchange wont give me 0.4Mb during the evenings?
it's a joke, the only upside is no cap.

the torrent software i use (utorrnet) has a scheduler, which is mint, ill just set it to leech hard and then slow down when needed

either way, they are still a joke!

ferFucks sake...you lot can't winge. Ok, so the interweb connections are $hit and Telecom are owned by a bunch of greedy fat American bar-stewards but hey, this is a beautiful country. It's clean, it's green, it's got honest politicians, low energy prices, the roads are billiard smooth and there's so much racial harmony.

Why can't you's be cheery like the pomms?

Telecom (Xtra) have been behind the eight ball for DSL plans for years now, even their competitors, who have to pay Telecom for the line traffic, can come up with a better plan than they can.

People, when considering a broadband plan, always, and I mean ALWAYS, look at the upload speed, not just the download, and look for shitty clauses, such as the ones outlined in Xtra's "new " plans.

I would wait a few months more, before committing to any sort of plan, as the full effects of the unbundling are far from being fully appreciated yet.

    For the laymen and women
Download speed = how fast images posted on KB take to show up on your screen
Upload speed = How long it takes to post your own pictures on KB.

The first "hi speed" plan I got it, was 128kbps down speed, and 128kbps up speed. Only marginally faster than dial up, and this plan was available 2000/2001. Today, 5 or 6 years later, we are still being offered 128kbps as an upload speed, which is truly, completely, astoundingly pathetic. Yes our download speeds are a bit faster, but we are still being offered 2nd rate plans at best, by Telecom. As I said, too soon to commit imo, wait a bit longer.
