    2 stroke oil

Hi. I've had my bike a little while now and its getting to the point where it needs the oil topped up. At the moment its about half full and the light has started to come on so i need some advicce. What are some good types of oil to use and does it matter if i top up with the new stuff hence mixing the two types or will i need to get rid of the old stuff first. Cheers.

Once you've chosen an oil stick to it. Adding a different oil to what's in there this time is fine. Stay well away from cheap petrol station oil.

    I myself, use Motul 710, it's about $28 a litre.

Ok, first point, your not still half full, the tank is much wider on the top than the bottom, so while it might still look pretty full it's not. I'd suggest you fill the tank as soon as possible once your light comes on (and check it occassionally just in case it stops working). Sure you'd probably get 100k or more once the light is on, but why find out just how far the hard way huh?

I've use silkolene full syn, and have just changed to castrol full syn. Both have been fine, no real noticible difference between the two. You should be able to pick both up for around $30 (unless anyone can tell us where to get it cheaper ). As said, fully synthetic is the way to go. It costs a bit more sure, but 1L lasts over 1000k for me, so when you look at it that way it's actually not that expensive.

What I'd love to know is what is a suitible gear oil to use in our little bikes. I looked for the recommended sae rated oil a while back and couldn't find anything even close, let alone got to the point of worrying whether I'd have clutch slippage problems...

So what oil do they recomend for your gearbox? Anything is suitable - GL4 gear oil,75/80,engine oil,10/30,or ATF - all are great in a 2 stroke box.I'm using 10/40 diesel engine oil right now.

Same as the engine, anything will do,2 strokes are a lot more toterant than you think - but always use the best oil you can afford, synth if possible.I use Silkolene too,Pro2.But as Fuchs no longer import it I'll be going to Castrol TTS,that works well too.Mobil 1 two stroke can often be found in Repco, and Repco are everywhere.

Spot on. But if you use fully or semi synth for the oil tank, just make sure it is suitable for injection. Some are more suited to premix. You can't do it any harm, but you can go through a hell of a lot otherwise!

Motu, have you ever used/tried Bel-Ray? I've seen some interesting things on our dyno with various different oils in two strokes....and mixture ratios.

I use Motul 710. Tried Mobil 1 2T; smoke everywhere and a bad stink that lasted for days.

    NEVER AGAIN ^_^

I've used Castrol TTS for as long as I can remember (and A747 in the Superkart) and haven't ever had a problem, it is easy to find and not to expensive

In the gearbox I use Elf Moto Gear oil 10/40, I've also used Castrol MTX10/40 and Motul 10/30 transoil all of which are supposedly developed for two stroke gearbox use

Oh yeah, forgot about premix/injector.The viscosity is almost important for injector oil,it has to go through the pump....don't be anal about it,but it's one less thing you've done wrong. It's not important for premix,so there is no need for them to make it to a set viscosity - actualy I think premix is thinner as they add stuff to make it mix better. It's harder to find injector oil as most 2 stroke oil is made for MX bikes, lawn mowers etc....so read that label.

Thanks for the advice. Everyone says use synthetic oil but is there any reason not to use mineral based oil. I got given some castrol activ 2T which is mineral based so just wondering is it not as good or is synthetic just a preference of yours.

Depends on how hard you ride the bike, normal 2 stroke should be ok for street riding, but if you thrash it or race it then use synth. You foul plugs quicker with dyno, almost never with synth.

Cheers Motu, I can't remember off the top of my head what was recommended (apart from the fact it was either very high or low ). I'll have another look with your advise thou. About time for a oil change too

I switched from Castrol Activ2T to TTS after my rebuild, but the engine had lasted quite well on the 2T by the looks. Still if nothing else the TTS is a sexy blue colour

But yeah, synth is the go for hard use apparently .

Highly recommend castrol r2, ran my rg150 on it and did wonders for it.
