It is a common phenomenom, known as strato phospherence. Quite often usually in unsettled weather patterns (can occur hundreds of miles from them) rapidly cooled warm air causes localised pockets of ice crystals to form. As these descend through the atmosphere (mostly seen in the late evening with the low refractive angle of light from the sun) the light reflects from them giving the impression of a light 'shower' or object in the sky. Mistaken for a UFO by lots of people...
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

I'd say it's a UFO cos then I'd be able to convince the blond next door that we're about to be invaded by aliens and we should shag before being turned into hors d'oevres.

    FINALLY a sensible answer!
