I must be getting old - I can recall when you walked out to the plane through the terminal door across the apron, see people getting of the plane on international flights and even talk to them as they cleared customs......and if you wanted to look at the airyplanes...why sure, just stand out here.........
Now, the whole bullshit , big bucks, high security (to people who don't matter), stress inducing miasma of airports, makes me wish there was some other way of getting around the world other than a rowboat!

"Oh so it is, its only the first name and the surname is good and the photo is fine as well"
"The card is a security risk because your name can't be read, you can't proceed to airside and I will need to confiscate the card"

Frau Gestapo drags me, protesting about delayed flights and not being able to get my car out of the carpark, to an interrogation room. Obviously fully aware of a backlash from Qantas about delaying an International flight, she immediatly issues me with a hand written temporary ID card and takes my old one away. She escorts me back through security and swipes me through the airside doors.

Good story I bet she wil be panicking tomorrow. OTT Did you intrsuct at the Airline Flying Club in the early 90's. If you did then you would have done my CPL in '92. Small world eh
So here I am airside, in control of an aeroplane (can be a dangerous thing), with a hand written piece of card for a security ID and still no-one has asked me to prove my name with any sort of Photo ID (remember my old one was taken because It was supposedly unreadable and was therefore a security risk). Frau Hitler had just assumed that because I was wearing a pilots uniform, had an obscured ID card, I was above board. She had ticked several boxes, blindly followed her procedures and had done some appropriate paperwork.
Had a few mins to spare so I stuck my passport in me back pocket and wandered back up the bridge to security and confronted her. I held up my piece of card which only had my name and the date on it alongside some security motif and asked her.
"How do you know that this is my name and that I am this person?"
Her Jaw hit the ground as she realised my point.
"Even banks need photo ID and yet you have just assumed I am who I am. You are aviation security and have let me airside"
"Well its not in our proceedures"
Her smirking subordinates were silently giving me approving looks as I proceeded to show her my passport and advise her that I was to be filing an aviation security related concern with regard to airside security.
I bet she will be sweating tomorrow! BTW did you instruct at the airline flying club in the 90's. If you did then you did my CPL in '92. Small world eh!
