Van window tinting.

I’ve got a van, which will likely be holding a race bike, which I’d prefer was not seen by anyone outside.

Can anyone recommend a window tint place, or a place which sells rolls of the stuff to do it yourself that has a good product and, of course, a good price?

Anything to look out for? Can I get it dark enough such that someone can’t see in to the back of the van, and still be legal? Are there different laws for vehicles registered for private use and commercial use?

Also, roughly what would I expect to pay to get the windows of a LWB Toyota Hiace done?

about $3-400.

rules are simple. you can paint the rear of a van out. only allowed 35% on driver and pax windows, and none on the front.

75% vlt is virtually black - i think they call it 'presidential' tint

you can get mirror tint film from places like Repco, Woottons or Supercheap for bout $30 a roll, which will do about 2 and a half windows on your van. You can't really see anything from the outside because its like a mirror, hence the name. Its easy enough to put on, just follow the instructions and use lots of soapy water when applying.

Yep,black paint from the inside - I'll do it for you for $150,or you can buy a can for $9 and do it yourself.

Just a word of caution....don't do the windscreen.

Unless you have lots of experience applying window tints, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself - it is really hard to achieve anything that doesn't resemble a shit job - look under auto tint in the yellow pages or ask a signwriter to recommend someone in your area.

indeed, i was gonna say use tipex ( might need copious amounts ) or failing that use that white window cleaner ( i cant remember the name of the stuff )

the mirror tint is illegal and they can make u pull it off if you get pulled over. something to do with blinding other road users when the sun shines on it

i had my wagon done for $390. was 35% which isnt very dark but its certified so i can get a wof with no hassles.

on my van i have the silver "reflective" tints. they keep the interior cooler and it is VERY hard to see inside, except the window that has no tint on it... casued by a bike that fell over and popped out the side window out at 100k/hr... now that was a loud and unexpectant noise... lol

i got mine done in nelson, i think they were called "tint wizard"... life time garuntee..!

ie: 20% is darker than 35%
i had 20% on the sides and 35% on the rear of my old skyline
now that was gansta!

general rule of thumb is about $50/window on average. average passenger vehicle normally costs about $250-300 to tint properly.

I think I'll give it a go myself. $8 per roll or something like that on trademe I think I saw last night, so can't go too far wrong. If it looks shit but peeps can't see my bike, then that's all good.

Won't use paint 'cos I do actually want to see a bit of what's behind me when backing.

I’m hoping that if they aren’t too sure, they will perform a risk analysis in their head to determine the likelihood of an economically favourable outcome of their theft, based on factors such as the socio-economic status of the surrounding area, the number of police stations nearby, the condition of the van, etc. and determine that it’s not worth it.

I’m also thinking maybe get some sign writing in plain white letters with something like:

“Lim’s Drying Shrimp Ltd.” or “Agrifarm cowshit shovelers” or something like that. Never washing it should help too.

Just have got a van myself. For $350 I also got an alarm installed which has some star rating and gave me cheaper insurance. If you follow suit make sure you also need to get a sensor in the back that monitor movement. Also have tinted windows, but the alarm is good peace of mind...
