    Riding to Uni..

Hey yas, just wondering how people manage with gear etc when using the bike to get to Uni daily? Do you not take alot of your gear, lug it around all day or what? Will be doing this next year so if anyone has tips the info'd be appreciated..

Lugged it around for year or so

Had a locker for a year

4th year had a lab so just dumped it in there

Locker the best bet, and a dirty fuck off great big chain around your bike so you dont have to walk home!

Me too! I want to know! I can manage to stuff my pants into my backpack but it's bloody heavy. Jacket and helmet I just carry and it's a massive pain in the arse.

There are a few solutions though that I'm yet to try. Helmet can be taken care of easily if you have helmet lock on your bike (I do, but the bloody clip-style helmet strap won't reach the lock). I have seen quite a few bikers who use bicycle locks and chains to tie their helmets and jackets to their bikes. I haven't look closely but I assume they're just running the chain through both sleeves of the jacket or something like that. Then for somebody to steal it they'd have to rip it. The only thing then you have to worry about is birdshit.

Before somebody else suggests it the lockers hold shit-all, definitely not a helmet.

Oh, I assume we are talking about University of Auckland here? I don't know what the story is at AUT, but then again you mentioned `uni' in the thread title, not `institute'

Just in general. Atm i'm looking at Massey or Unitec... parking will be sweet but gear could be a pain...

I've got a kryptonite lock that the dude threw in when i bought my bike so i'll use that mebe for the bike...

I go to AUT, there's lockers in the WS building that were free to use to the first person to put a padlock on them at the start of the year. They're free because things were getting stolen from them and the student association found they were responsible for people's stuff if they charged for the lockers. The locks are fixed now though. There's other lockers at AUT I think in the A block, maybe other places too that you can use but have to hire them. I've got myself two lockers, one for the helmet and gloves, the other for my pants and jacket. I wear leather work boots and just hope I don't have any accidents severe enough that they can't cope. But it'd be possible to fit boots in with the helmet and gloves locker.
Contact the student association or student information at whichever uni you decide to go to and ask about lockers. It definately beats lugging stuff around, even if it's just a helmet.

Get a topbox and put your stuff in there. Having a scooter now I have lots of space to put everything but with my motorbike I used to put my jacket & gloves in my bag. It was a hassle to have a overfilled and heavy bag to lug around.

If you have a clip type helmet xerxesdaphat, then you can either get a padlock or grind down the helmet lock to make it skinnier, I have done both of those methods in the past to accomodate for my annoying clip helmet.

Top box is the go. I stuck a double on my bike and I can fit all my gear in/on my bike now (trousers, jacket, gloves, helmet & boots)! The box comes off easily (for when I don't want to look like a nana) and hasn't ever bothered me (while riding). My plan this summer is to buy some Draggin jeans (or trousers) so all I have to worry about is jacket, helmet and gloves!

i am at auck uni and i just have one locker that my boots pants jacket and gloves go into. i just padlock the helmet to the outside of the locker, it secure and dry. i also keep a pair of normal shoes at uni and put them on when i drop my gear off. works well apart from when everything is soaking wet and has to get put in for a few hours (peeeww)

Rofl didn't you get the email saying that if you left helemets locked to the front of your locker theyd be cut off for safety reasons.....what a joke.

Anyway I lock my helmet onto the bike with a bike lock around the chin section of the helmet and onto the sissy bar of the bike and the helmet sits on the pillion seat. I don't trust those helmet lock things on the bike, its too easy to cut the helmet straps with a knife

I wear draggin jeans and some sturdy leather work boots and the jacket/gloves get thrown into a locker.

However If im just there for one or two lectures I just lug my gloves in my helmet and jacket on my back.

A top box would be a sensibilish solution but then again when have motorbikers been sensible?

At Akld uni, have always attached my helemet to my bike and jacket and the restb of it goes in a locker uni the quad.
Make sure you get the locker at start of year and at $40 for the whole year its not too bad.
true that it is not big enough for a helemet but some other areas also have lockers that are big enough i think the maths building has some.

I don't live too far from uni so just usually wear jeans and carry round my helmet on wet days, fine days lock it to my bike with my gloves under the seat. Wear my leather jacket round to my classes then again I go back and foward to uni in between classes.
You know you had a good nite when you have to ask someone if you had a good nite.

At the education campus of auckland uni, in Epsom.

The lockers there are tiny, and $20 a semester!

*if i only have one lecture, i will either park bike right outside classroom () and just lug my gear into class with me (gals like watching me get changed )

*if there for the day, everything fits in the little locker! helemet 'just' fits when door in certain position. wear draggin jeans with armoured overpants on top, all fold up and squeezed in. pain to have to walk to locker after class, takes ages and then it's a smeg of a long walk to carpark from the locker! Dont have prob with 'wet gear in locker' issue, as normally drive my mini in when it's raining..

Only thing about epsom, is the carpark is a bit of a walk... ...so if i get there late i will just ride bike into campus along the footpaths etc and park right next to my class! easy ...oh and bikes alarmed too

I refuse to use the helmet lock on the bike, for same reason posted earlier. just cut the strap and you got yourself a $900 helmet... ummm naaa wont be taking that risk!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

...i reckon i could even get into one of the elevators, doing a little wheelie up the wall or something and then reverse out 3-4 stories up! would be able to ride down the hall and into my class then!!! hahaha!!
