PC retail is pretty broad.. alot of places dont do second hand gear, so they have no idea about the aftermarket value. Also simply selling 2nd hand PC's doesnt necesarily give you the knowledge of the used market, because 2nd hand dealers tend to pay very low prices, and sell for quite high prices.. The fair private sale value is generally somewhere in the middle.
Your best bet is to talk to someone who is an authorised buyer at a 2nd hand PC shop.
.
or start surfing tardme for similar items, to get an idea of what the market thinks its worth
I work for a company that deals soley in laptops.
Just sold a Satellite A10 (3years old) for $550 (2.5ghz celeron 40gb hdd 15" screen 512mb pc2700 ram)
and just bought a Satellite A80 (1 year old) for $425+gst (1.8ghz pentium M 60gb hdd 15" screen 512mb pc2700 ram)
bad news for you im sorry but laptops just hit the deck. (we flood the market with our end of lease stuff)

"I'm gonna get to the bottom of this, and I dont give a fuck if you're at the top!!!"
Problem with mine is it was a high end buisness machine which Im not willing to let go of for cheap and cheerful.

When you say high end business machine what do you mean? What are the specs? High end Gaming laptops have been seen to fetch fairly high prices but it all depends on specs. As for sale, you would be able to get much more selling privately.
[edit] - by high end business machine you mean fast processor with no decent graphics perf to back it up I'm afraid you'd probably have to wait and hope that someone who doesn't know too much gets wooed by the processor spec... Mind you there are a lot more of those around on trademe than people who actually know what they're talking about so it might turn out better for you after all.
I have deep pockets. It's just that it's a deep empty pocket...........
what is it exactly sniper? a make and model will suffice (part number if its a toshiba please)

honestly .... why dont you just keep it.
Second hand pcs/laptops are never going to be worth anything, but it will still be a fine, usable machine for a good while yet ....
