Man Jailed Over Titahi Bay Murder Had Previous Convictions For Assaulting Women

    Newsroom Agency Story5:26pm, 9th November 2006

A High Court sentencing hearing has heard that the man who stabbed his former partner to death at a beach north of Wellington had previous convictions for violence against women.

Tony Tiumalu was sentenced today to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole term of 14 years.

He stabbed his former partner, Susanna Brown more than 20 times in front of witnesses as they sat in a car at Titahi Bay beach.

Justice Clifford described the attack as brutal and referred to Tiumalu's three earlier convictions for assaulting women, one of which related to Susanna Brown.

He said a pre-sentence report showed that Tiumalu had an inability to manage relationship issues and a propensity for violent behaviour.

Meanwhile, the victim's family say they are disappointed with the jail term handed down to her killer, but pleased it is more than the minimum.

Ms Brown's mother believes it will be hard to mend the rift between her family and that of her daughter's killer.

She says the family will never forget the violence which Tiumalu inflicted on her daughter.

I knew Susanna through rugby at Norths (rugby club). I didn't having anything to do with her outside of rugby but from what I knew of her she was a nice girl. They should put that bastard in a concrete water tank and let him starve to death.

we will never be free of this sort of behaviour as long as women think that, somehow, the odds are in favour of the perpetrator's behaviour changing if the woman concerned stays with him despite his previous offending

sure - it may happen sometimes but it's not something any sensible woman should be prepared to risk her health, happiness or [in this instance] her life on.

.... what the hell - 'the powers' can't even get people banned from owning a dog ... let alone stopping them forming relationships with women ....

Once is too often when it comes to domestic abuse (physical, emotional, sexual or verbal).

That cuts both ways, (Men and Women as perps) and it's a simple matter of self respect. Respect yourself enough to keep yourself, and any loved ones, safe. End of story, no correspondence entered into in person.

Sort it or end it. Leaving now before I really push my own buttons - I've seen and heard of too much of this shit.

Spoke with a couple of friends about this and there is aparently a significant chance he won't make it to court if kept in the cells with other inmates...

This way his personal safety is assured and justice can be done

This is just too normal for some of the inadequate 'men' we produce.
I guess rugby/booze culture just doesn't prepare some people for real life.

I saw a billboard for "White Ribbon Day" - Something about men against violence towards women. Good sentiment but I can see that the guys wearing the ribbons are the guys that already treat women right. And the rest will say "...another f*cking ribbon day..."

How about making any guy convicted of any physical abuse to undergo anger management or something. And if he still doesn't learn, cuts his nuts off.

i'm not sure about the value of this
    - not sure it doesn't re-inforce the commonly-held misconception that domestic violence is only male on female .......

    Agreed...

I'd like to see a wider non violence type movement. The greed we all seem to have picked up leads us to think the strong no longer have a duty to protect the weak from harm (I'm aware thats a 19th century attitude).

There is a bunch of stuff going on out there. People seem to think it's OK to whack people etc and that medical science can fix anything and it's all OK.. It's not OK - anytime you raise a fist or throw a bottle there is a very high chance you can kill or seriously disable someone. I find it very odd that we have such punative OSH laws aimed at preventing all sorts of work place injury but nothing can be done against the bottle throwers and fight starters.

I wish I knew how to make myself a better person and how to help society evolve - but I don't. What i do know is we are far too tolerent of the loud mouthed yobbos who are quick with the mouth and fist and slow with the brain.. Stuff em....
