Man Jailed Over Titahi Bay Murder Had Previous Convictions For Assaulting Women
Newsroom Agency Story5:26pm, 9th November 2006
A High Court sentencing hearing has heard that the man who stabbed his former partner to death at a beach north of Wellington had previous convictions for violence against women.
Tony Tiumalu was sentenced today to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole term of 14 years.
He stabbed his former partner, Susanna Brown more than 20 times in front of witnesses as they sat in a car at Titahi Bay beach.
Justice Clifford described the attack as brutal and referred to Tiumalu's three earlier convictions for assaulting women, one of which related to Susanna Brown.
He said a pre-sentence report showed that Tiumalu had an inability to manage relationship issues and a propensity for violent behaviour.
Meanwhile, the victim's family say they are disappointed with the jail term handed down to her killer, but pleased it is more than the minimum.
Ms Brown's mother believes it will be hard to mend the rift between her family and that of her daughter's killer.
She says the family will never forget the violence which Tiumalu inflicted on her daughter.
