when i cought up with group, three of you were on the side of the road and i stopped, they asked me if i had seen a guy on a blue bike which i hadnot.

Went around the corner to find the rest of the group waiting.. ..brought them up to speed and we all waited for at least 15-20 min before deciding to go home.

(i was TEC by the way)
    No worries DD.
It was me that told you at Waimakau and I was the guy on the blue bike the others were asking about. Those who peeled off (me included) should have told Qkchk and the group before the start of the second leg.

However f#$ked up it was, something good has come out of it - I will be including in my briefings from now on that if anyone does peel off to tell the group leader. And thats why its important to listen to the briefing too so you understand what is happening.... Eg: Second rider to go pointer.......

I'll let you fellas off, youre only freshmen......... however, take note:

Why is it important to tell the group leader that youre peeling off?

    1. The group leader will be the first to stop at a re-group (like durrghh) and will know if anyone has passed/carried on etc.....

    2. If you tell someone further down in the pack, there is a high chance of someone up the front of the pack thinking, "he should of been here by now" and then taking off before the "told person" comes through........ (and thats what happened last night)

    3. So we don't organise a search and recovery group on a wild goose chase. It's part of KB, we look out for other bikers and if someone is missing we tend to assume the worst...............but hopefully its only a punture or breakdown..

    Cool

    Riders peeling off......

I agree tell the Leader of the pack.... and also tell the TEC as well.

But can I add in one other thing...

If you peel off, wait at the corner/intersection you are peeling off at, for the TEC to arrive and signal to them, that you are now leaving the group.

That way when the TEC catches up to the leader..... they can inform the leader that the rider has now left the ride.

That way both people know what is happening.

It just makes it a lot more easier to know where everyone is.
Especially when there are a number of riders on a run.
It saves a lot or worry and riders going back over roads looking for lost riders.

(I did this on MahaMan's coast to coast ride when I peeled off. I informed both leader and TEC MadDuck what I was doing and waited til TEC arrived at the point I was leaving the group. I waved as she went past and I rode off)

As this will be the final Monday ride this year, I'll try my best to come see the old crew and say hi to the newbies.
