Don't you go telling my teenager to break the law - he believes (cos thats the way we brought him up) that there are consequences to all actions, good and bad.... please don't shatter our illusions.
Karma will get the liitle toe rag..we, alas, will have to be happy with that.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding this case - the parents wanted to give Liam a bit of a shock to make him mend his ways...so charged him with the theft of his mother's car,get him sent to prison, mix with real crims....get a big fright. It backfired, really sad of course - but now it's somebody else's fault? Hell - oh?

no it didnt backfire, if they didnt do anything he would have ended up dead anyway. this way he doesnt hurt anybody.
I meant good in a different way, like it made us teens (well not me, im not stupid enough to get into that crap) think about it

Don't be an arse, I can hardly see how a young kid sent to prison for a relatively minor offence being killed by some psychopath is a good thing at all. For you to even suggest that pisses me off quite a lot. According to the papers at the time, the killer was a seriously warped guy, had been in trouble for all kinds of violent things. Since when have we had capital punishment for stealing your mum's car in NZ -- without a judge or trial being involved? Dickhead. I'm a teenager too, and hearing about that case made me lose even more respect for the justice system -- there's no way that stuff like that should be allowed to happen -- rather than gaining any, as you seem to be suggesting.
Isn't this now?? The 1st post has a link to an article about a teenager getting charged with driving offences 'cos he's "too young" to go to jail after killing people in a serious crash.
What's that got to do with Liam? He was turned in by his parents, and unfortunately killed by a nutter.

New Zealand did indeed have borstals. Waikeria in the northern King Country was huge. It is now a prison. We also used to have an Army Cadet Corps. Poor little bastards.

Yip still do that.
They call it Limeted Service "Volunteers", it is a 6 week course held in Burhnam using the military as a vehicle to teach these kids some life skills.
WINZ sends people on the course to give people a taste of the Military and to learn some discipline etc
But it is also where some get sent between conviction and sentancing.
They, 3LFG LSV COY, run 5 courses a year which run for 6 weeks 7days a week during that time.
I post to LSV COY in Jan for one of them as Plt Cmd and will let you know how it goes.
Still do mate.
I was a cadet. Rose to the lofty heights of Sgt, and am now serving in the Defence Force.
Right thats it. I'm going to go and dampen my bus ticket right now.
i wanted to go there, but got turned down cos im too heavy for my height. so fuck em... i didnt even need to go there, but wanted to.
we had some dodgy lookin young kids hanging around my work last week. one used the loo and was spotted with something up his jumper. when questioned by another staff member, it turned out to be a bottle of wine [which we dont sell]
lucky for him, there was a mufti carload of cops talkin to his mates and they grabbed him as well. thing is, they would have been about 12-17 at the oldest, so again nothing will be done. the prick also vomitted in our toilet...i think he was made to clean it up.
all 5 of them are dropkicks already, and honestly, i can see where liams death is truly a good thing. look at the pics the papers used; he looks arrogant and a smart ass who likely said something to the psycho. if i was in a van with other prisoners, my eyes would be glued to the floor.

"He was getting smart" is the standard defence for monkey's arse biscuits like that.
Getting smart to some one (or more accurately them making up in their poor excuse for a brain that you're getting smart) is no excuse for killing some one regardless of how much of a toe-rag he was.
The level of my caring however does decrease proportionately as the toe-rag factor increases.
If the parents are so keen to blame some one in this situation, consider this: your son was a toe-rag. You made the decision to put him with violent criminals to scare him. Who had involvement in both factors?
if that kid was my son...i would have done the exact same thing. and i wouldnt be bitching about it now either. they took their chances, and now hes dead. sure, he shouldnt have been in the same compartment, but then, he shouldnt have needed to be taught a lesson in the first place. i wish more parents had the balls these ones do.
my brother has been a hellion since he was about 14...drugs, booze, more drugs, a lot more booze, physical fights at parties, never going to work, putting holes in his walls and doors, rolling his car [nearly killing him and his mates], having his gut pumped. etc etc. you name it, hes done it.
i honestly wish my parents had let him go down the first time he went to court, cos hed be a very different person today. im still living with the effects of what hes done [he tried to rape me when i was 9] and hate him with a vengence. he looks exactly the same as liam does. exactly the same. my parents nearly divorced cos of him, and have no money after coughing up everytime he needs something. but to them...golden boy can do no wrong. [you can see i have a boulder on my shoulder!] all that, and hes still their angel.
having lived with that for 21 years, i can safely say, liam would have gone the exact same path. and as a result, one more bit of strength is taken from parents trying to keep their kids on the straight and narrow.
hxc sounds like hes gonna come out a great kid, but as i said, all of his succeses will be ignored by society, who is focused on tomorrows little snot licker causing trouble. when was the last time you heard on the news of 3 or 4 teens doing something like voulnteer to collect trash, or scrub graffitti off walls? i dont doubt there are some out there doing just that. its like at school; i was branded a freak cos i helped in the library rather than sneaking off for a smoke. and if i recall, i didnt even get a thank you for that.
