Oregon Camera (Bike Cam)

I'm still having variable results with my Oregan camera. Foam under the card seemed to help, although I've just changed that to a layer of insulation tape stuck to the underside of the card itself. Also the camera may be sensitive to the lower voltage of rechargeable batteries? I seem to have fewer problem after switching to alkaline batteries, or they could just be making better contact?

By the way, you can often recover "missing" videos if the camera errors during recording by running a file recovery tool on the card while it's plugged in via USB. The standard Tools-Error Checking utility in XP will recover the files. Just rename them as .avi and use something like Classic Media Player to play them or fix the avi file with a suitable utility.

In my quest to find the perfect Bike Cam, I think I have found a pretty good one. Its Called "Oregon Scientific" and costs $200. Available from Noel Leemings .

Well, as I didn't make the Dusty Butt 1000 yesterday, I did manage a bit of time away from the office this afternoon and took my new Oregon Scientific ACtion Cam for a spin. I managed just over 2 hours of footage on 3 cards with no dramas or switching off problems that some of you have experienced.

Those of you that have had card troubles, do you realise that you need to push your card in past level with the opening ( use your fingernail ) and the card will click and lock onto place. As for batteries, I was using 2x 2300mAh AA batteries, and good quality Sandisk 2Mb cards, but the big problem a lot of you seem to have is with mounting, so I used that rubber strap and fixed it to my leg around my boot just above the ankle. That way I could twist my foot to get views to the left and right etc, as well as being able to tilt it up and down.

I had a mate along for the ride on his Africa Twin, and we took turns at leading so sometimes the camera was facing forwards and sometimes backwards, seemed to work OK in thick dust on the shingle too

I'm a stills photographer by profession, and this is my first foray into video, and as the smallest video files I shot are around 500Gb, they're a wee bit on the big side to upload. Does anyone have any ideas or software advice for editing the files so I can cut them into smaller sequences and post some examples. I've got a great bit of footage the other evening when a large Wallaby jumped out of some bush and bounded up the track 20 metres in front of the KLR until escaping up a bank into the trees.....

Help needed.... Nordieboy ?? Any ideas ???

same problem as RedKLR650, how do I cut or should I say edit them in to smaller size files so I can upload on to yourtube.

I,m running XP home, what software would I need to edit.

If you've got windows xp, then you should probably try Windows Movie Maker

(looks like there's more info on how to use it here)

I think it comes with some versions of XP or you can download it there.

I've only got windows 2000 so I use virtualdub for basic video editing and compression.

Success! I managed to record around an hour of video yesterday with minimal video "wobble" and no switch-off problems. The layer of standard insulation tape on the bottom of the SD card seems to have solved the contact problems with the card. I wonder if different manufacturers cards have slightly different dimensions? The card was always "clicked" into place, but seemed to lose contact over bumps as you could watch the recovered video and see the road feature that caused the jolt coming just before it switched off.

Secondly I moved the camera off the handle bars down to beside the engine on the crash bars, so the camera is solidly mounted to the frame effectively. I used the bar mount and some foam, but the foam is fairly compressed and just takes up the difference in dimensions between the bar and the mount.

I've used MS Moviemaker on XP to edit/compress the files so far, but my next plan is to try some Xvid encoding.

Seems to work fairly well but there's a vid later on labled I dropped the camera or something like that so you may want to tape it in or something instead of just setting it in there.

Damn. He must have a really queer shaped head to get the camera inside like that. Weird.
