shit take your pick.....the whole water front is one big motel

    check out www.wotif.com

for last minute accommodation bargins, leave it to the last minute and you'll pick up some deals, although it is a busy time of year...so

I've stayed in a place called the terraces hotel, nice rooms - booked it the night before and got a premium suite for half price...nice

Or here: http://www.taupotop10.co.nz. The Top 10 chain are superb everywhere. We're staying with them as much as possible on our "Birds Galore" south island tour.

All seasons or top ten are good clean cheap options.
If you want something a little closer to town:

http://travelink.co.nz/nz/CatellisOfTaupo.html close enough to town (2 blocks) and off the main road a bit.

http://lechaletsuisse.co.nz/ is one block stumble from the town centre, off the main road a little and cheepish

http://www.suncourt.co.nz/ is right next door, also fairly well priced

http://www.bellavistamotels.co.nz/new-zealand/taupo/ is a new place, 2 blocks from town

hope this helps, might catch you when you are in town

I rent a house off a guy every August when we go to Taupo. PM me if you are interested and I will give you his phone number. It is a 2 min walk to town.

Caboose is a good one to avoid - expensive and cramped, tiny rooms.

A bunch of us stayed at the Suncourt about 2 weeks ago and it was pretty good value. We were even able to park our bikes under cover at our door.
