A Hastings woman is breastfeeding a 10-week old puppy and doesn't believe there is anything wrong with her actions.
Kura "Kat" Tumanako began breastfeeding the staffordshire bull terrier pup after her two-and-a half month old baby, Honey Pauline Philomina Flo, went onto bottled milk.
Despite being pregnant with another child, Tumanako is unrepentant for her actions and says she will continue feeding the dog for a further six weeks.
The SPCA says breastfeeding a dog does not constitute cruelty and there is nothing in the Animal Welfare Act that could be applied to this particular case.
Despite this, there were concerns the dog could develop long-term beavioural problems.
Breastfeeding puppies is unheard of in New Zealand, however women from Papua New Guinea hill tribes have been known to have breastfed pigs.
