Had to laugh. I think the Weather here is fabulous - even when it rains! (The rain is generally still warm and rarely horizontal).

I have never heard a bunch of people who have it so good moan so much - go live in the west of Scotland for a Decade and then come back to NZ and complain about the weather!

Hi Mark - you'll love it here whole days go by without rainfall it's uncanny.

    Oamaru/Timaru/Christchurch - flat as a pancake - straight roads....go west young man.

    Hi myrkross,

Are you asking if you can just ride off the road and onto the tussock? You'd better not do that in any of the national parks - especially alpine ones. Very delicate ecosystems and all that.

But there are plenty of places you can go off-road and have a blast. Beaches included. Maybe you should head to the far north and include 90-mile beach in your tour.

I'm sure there are plenty of off-road types around here who will show you their favourite places.

    Welcome along on the ride

Thats funny, they told me 20 when I told em I was jumping ship.

Welcome Mark...take no notice of these pommie-bashers. They forget that Captain Cook came from Blighty and if it were'nt for him they wouldn't be here! But they're not a bad bunch. They talk a bit funny and think that we poms are the ones with the accent! Most sentences end in the word "aye" which is spoken with a sudden rise in intonation. Don't worry, you'll get used to it. I hope you like Rugby because everything stops here for a Rugby match. And if the AB's lose (which I must admit is boringly rare) the whole country goes into mourning and some how they will always find a reason to slag off the opposition. They also think that watching V8's trundle round a racetrack is exciting. Despite all that, Kiwis will talk to anyone as if they have known them for years which is great! You will be made to feel welcome from the minute you step off the plane (witness this site for example). Be prepared to re-think how you ride/drive because you need to master the art of survival on NZ roads. The worldwide reputation that NZers have for being crap drivers is pretty well confirmed mainly due to boy racers being allowed to drive cars before their balls have dropped and their voices have broken. On the upside, the roads and scenery are perfect for biking. The place is beautiful, and you can find a thirty mile stretch of "awesome" twisties and have it all to yourself (except for a few sheep here and there) as easy as saying "sweet as". Schoolboys wear short trousers and long socks here...mmm! - In fact shorts are worn by blokes throughout winter!!, sometimes with Wellington boots. Houses are nailed together with wood and corrugated iron and central heating as we know it hasn't been discovered yet! Housing in general is single storey and (thank god) you rarely see two houses the same in the same street unlike back home.
So when people say "put your watch back 20 years" you can kind of see where they are coming from. They still have trolley buses and trams in some towns and webs of overhead wires supported by telegraph poles spoil the feel of some areas. Motorways are pretty much non existant (which could be a blessing, thinking of the M25) but what they call rush hour over here is more like a Sunday morning drive through the Cotswolds!
But thats where it ends. Seems to me NZ is well advanced in most areas compared to England. In fact for a small country with less folk living here than do in London, it does bloody well.
Me? I love it here. I have been here three years and I have no regrets about emigrating. I have resisted the temptation to return to the UK in that time for I feel sure that if I do I will probably be itching to get back here after a couple of weeks! Keep us informed of how your plans are progressing. Meanwhile here are some pics to whet your appetite.

PS. Never ask a kiwi girl to show you a good route or you might get a slap in the face!

Dead right VAMR. I haven't forgiven the fuckers for Culloden, and now he wants to claim that shitehole is my motherland.

Welcome to the madness, please don't feed the animals! lol
You will find plenty of guys here that will show you off-road stuff that will make you never want to leave, especially in the south. They will probably be along shortly, but this country is biking heaven for any type.
    enjoy

You're English? Oh, deary me, your English! Wait until Hitcher gets here! I suppose you could blame a midnight post and tiredness...

    Beware the BDOTGNZA!

Welcome and you'll be most welcome! NZ is biker's heaven! First, you don't know where to start, then you don't know where to stop! Despite the step back in time coming here, we can be surprisingly modern and up to date in some things. Electronic technology is keenly subscribed too here with most people familiar with the latest in communication and video tech. Have a browse of the Image Gallery for some great pics of the country and the riders and bikes here!
