Question Opinions wanted: suggestions for a south island trip

    Howdy folks,
believe it or not but after (is it 4 years already?!!) Mr and Mrs. Street Gerbil are ready to hit the road. The plan so far is:
    a) Leave Auckland and get to Welly.
    b) Take a ferry to Picton.
    c) Drive to Clyde.
    d) Leave the car in Clyde and ride a pushbike to Middlemarch.
    e) Get back to Clyde, pick up the car, go to Fox Glacier.
    f) Picton -> Welly and back to Auckland.
All that in approximately 3 weeks.
The question is what kind of places would you folks recommend us to visit in between? We are on a shoestring budget and mainly after free activities e.g. day to two day hikes, MTB/trail riding, sightseeing and suchlike.
Any recommendation including campsites, watering holes etc will be much appreciated.
Any recommendation on similar activities on our way to Welly will be much appreciated too.
    Thanks!
    Mr and Mrs SG
