This is where BMW ownership has it's benefits- after sales support. BMW have realised early in the piece that some owners are finding the gear change a bit too clunky and/or some are getting false neutrals in one of the top gears. I have come across a few falsies (on the bike, not tits) into 5th I think ? BMW are distributing two modifications worldwide and have added these mods to new bikes made after Feb 07. One is a replacement front cog to drive the belt. This one has a rubber cush built in to reduce any vibes - I have not noticed any backlash/vibes from the belt drive myself, in fact it feels much quieter and smoother than any chain drive by a long shot.
The second is a voluntary mod at the owners choice swapping a washer in the clutch assembly that improves gear changes. BMW state the trade off is a louder clunk engaging 1st from neutral "a noise similar to some Japanese bikes" quote BMW germany (ha ha that made me laugh, Germans with a sense of humour?)
The F800 owners forum has a couple of owners who have recently received these mods and they confirm gear selection is better and it's fixed the odd falsie.
I've spoken with BMW NZ and they confirmed they have been informed of these mods and will contact owners when the parts arrive. All covered under warranty.

Here's another great story. A UK owner took his F800 in for it's 6000 mile service happy as Larry about the condition of his bike. The shop ring him later to say..THEY are not happy with the condition of the enamel paint on the engine, so they have ordered an entire new motor for his bike! I've done 9000km now and the enamel is like new. No other owners on the forum have found any probs with the paint.

Dave Anderson's gave me a nice rubber Suzuki key ring. It doesn't scratch the paint.

You should try a modern jappa 4. Whenever I ride something other than GSXR I always forget to use the gearbox like a man and fuck up changes. Mind you, a GSXR is a girls bike.

I wonder if a K1200(n) has a good gearbox... Someone give me theirs to try out...

Actually forget the Jap multi, you should try hooking up with Ivan. I'm sure you two would get on great.

Saves wasting all that punctuation I guess.

Another update. Got the mods done.

Back in post 63 I mentioned that BMW were distributing improved parts free of charge. These modifications became standard on F800 made after Feb 07.
I had these mods fitted today - rubber cushed front pulley for the belt drive and 2 washers in the clutch asssembly. Only had a short taste tonight but...
Fan-bloody-tastic. What was already a great bike to ride just got better. I've always found the parallel twin is smoother than a V but now it's gone up another notch...or three. At slow speeds at low revs there was a bit of transmission backlash before. These parts have totally cured that and now it's a dream to tackle things like a tight roundabout at idle, no jerkiness, just silky smooth movement and pulls away effortlessly from anywhere without any vibration. I tried to see if it would stall going around roundabouts down to 1500 revs and nothing but clean pick up all the way. It has given the bike a much wider spread of useable revs. Went up Ngauranga gorge in top in traffic at 70kph (almost under 2000 revs) and not a sign of any shake, rattle or vibe.
Makes riding in commuter traffic a pleasure. Wasted on me since I only ride to work about once a week.
The washers have also made the gear changes easier i.e. a lighter jab does the job and it feels more secure when it goes in now. To any owners out there not sure - check with your shop and get the mods done, you wont regret it.
I've also added a centrestand and fitted an Akrapovic can. The can removed 4kg and seems to add a little more go juice.
What else? Clocked up 12,000kms and the finish is spotless, like new.
I think I have run out of extras to fit??? Nothing to do now but ride for 20,000km between services, ha ha.
Oh yeah, see BMW throw in free pussy with every bike.

I've got a bottle (unopened - why would anyone open a bottle of Clayton's). Found it in a supermarket in Aus a couple or five years ago. When I say I found it - doesn't mean I was LOOKING for it! But when I saw it I had to have it.

Damn, that is one of the saddest stories I have ever heard.
ACC - It's where the Enron accountants all went.
