    Wtd: VT250FG engine

    Seems I've done a big end bearing on my '86 VT250FG, and the most economical option is to replace the engine.

    Anybody got one? I'd consider a whole bike, especially since my fairings are a bit dodgy, but don't really need them and would prefer not to spend the money at this stage.

    If you have an engine out of something similar that you think would fit, I might be interested, but would have to be either extremely cheap or with the option to return it if it doesn't fit (eg the VTZ looks incredibly similar, but I gather the mounts may be different)

    The more local (close to Wellington) the better - especially if it's a whole bike.

    Cut your loses and sell what you've got left. They're getting pretty old now, and one thing they do well is crap themselves, leaving you with a pretty low supply of healthy donor engines. Another bike would be a reasonably good idea, although getting something rough to flog the engine out of might bite you if the motor has been 'maintained' as well as the rest of it.

    Yes, I contemplated that. It will depend a bit on what I can get an engine for. The bike will be worth stuff all as it is, and significantly more running - hopefully more than I have to pay for the engine (and fitting).

    It's kind of annoying timing - I've just got my restricted, and assuming I do the defensive driving course, only 3 months till I'm eligible for my full and a bigger bike, so flogging it off means I have to choose a new bike that I only want for a short time. Seems simpler to fix this one, even if it's not otherwise the best option. Make sense? None of it really does to me, but that does more than most. I think.

    I think it's also probably my own fault this one died (let it run too low on oil), so with a bit more babying hopefully I can at least make the next one hang together for 3 months ...

    Of course, with the extra outlay now, it cuts into what I was planning on spending on a bigger bike somewhat.

    3 months is a very short time, and it's easy to spend way more than you imagined getting a hack back up to scratch. Spend the 3 months saving your money towards its replacement would be the better long term choice. Plus, spend that 3 months selling everything off of the VT on trademe

    cost me $800 for my engine when I replaced it.

    FYI the vtr engine of the same erra (i think 85 to 91 ) fits in just as well (it's what I put in mine) You just need to switch over the ignition sequencing flywheel. Alternativley if you did get a vtr engine I have the CDI for it so you won't need to swap the flywheel over

    how many times did i ramble on to check the engine out eh?

    put a vtz engine in it, its the better of the 3
