I imagine he's talking about the DRM scheme on the AAC files you get from iTunes.

Personally, I don't have a problem paying for music, and I haven't yet run into the necessity of bypassing protection schemes from online services.

Although I have when it comes to actual CDs, strangely enough. I bought 'Demon Days' by Gorillaz and realised it was copy-protected. I detested the horrid software that had to be used to play it on my PC, so I un-copy-protected and re-imaged it.

Now I can listen to that CD at full quality whenever I like through my SB Audigy at work, and I can also distribute full-quality unprotected copies of it as a 'fuck you' to the publisher in recompense for the couple of hours it took me to 'fix' it.

    Want one?

I managed to import Demon Days in iTunes (on a Mac) without a problem...does the issue arise elsewhere?

I wouldn't be surprised if iTunes was in cahoots with the copy-protection scheme on that CD, or something. Or maybe Macs are just smarterer about munged CDs.

If you pop it into a vanilla WinPC, you can't see the audio tracks on the CD to rip - it just comes up as a data CD with a horrible little player app you can run that automagically accesses the hidden music partition, or whatever it is, so that you can listen to it.

It runs MacOSX, and they don't get in my way, it'll be totally hackable and it will be possible to install whatever software I want on it.

Ok, compiling said software is going to ages on something like that.

I, for one, welcome our Apple iPhone overlord.

Yep... it's all bad. The monopolistic tendencies of Apple make Microsoft look like amateurs.

    Form over Function.

I would rather a utilitarian looking thing that does what I need and doesn't fail the first time it jumps a few metres off my desk on to concrete......

Dude. Cross-compilers, dude. You obviously got out of embedded systems development sometime before the 1970s...

Im all for function over form too. However, will you get somerhting that will do all that and fit in your pocket? Maybe they have a minimum dexterity requirement?

Yeah I know, but I don't have a MacOS X box, and getting libraries and shit all at the same version and yada yada yada.. If I were to compile something for my Playstation 2 it would be done on the Playstation. And likewise the 40MHz SparcStation.. You just go watch TV or make dinner

Hahahha, take that Jobs ya smarmy prick!

Form over function? Given that the iPod is good looking with excellent functionality that the others have been falling over themselves unsuccesfully trying to better, I seriously doubt that this will be anything but nice to use.

As for compiling on embedded devices... normally you would compile on the host and pump up the binary to the unit, no reason why that should be slow.

They still wont change there form to add function that has been asked for by many such as Voice recording and FM radio, as its too hard to ensure the quality/"form" of these things .......

Stop and think about this... why would they? You've seen an iPod right? The dock connector at the bottom? Yeah, that's what they call proprietary. They sell the rights to be able to make things to plug into it for big money. The lack of voice recording and FM radio is a marketing thing, they could easily fit it in an iPod if they wanted to. It has absolutely nothing to do with form over function.

    Actually it does.

Your reason does have some basis to it.

Another is that the form of the Ipod cannot be controlled with say a FM receiver. Quality will drop according to signal strength and Ipod has no way of ensuring a decent sound from this. Hence they let other brands take the rap for poor "form" of FM .....
