WTD: graduate mechanical engineering job

In November last year I completed a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in mechanical design at the Auckland University of Technology and am now looking for work.

There are very few positions for mechanical engineering graduates being advertised on the online job sites I check, so I thought I'd post here in case anyone knows of any suitable jobs that are available.

I'm hoping to find something within commuting distance of west Auckland.

What sort of mech eng jobs are you looking for. There are a few around in building services - we have just hired a mech grad at work.

Forget about the online stuff mate. Get your CV in to the big consulting engineering firms, they always have positions that aren't advertised - Beca, Opus, Monty's etc etc.

geoffm, I'm not really sure what sort of job I want. The BEngTech is just a 3 year technician's degree, I'm not sure how different it is to a proper 4 year BE, but I know I can't register as a professional engineer.
The other thing is I don't know what it's like in the industry, I don't know how much of the stuff I've learned is going to be useful, or what types of work are available.
I think I'm interested in mechanical design, I enjoy doing calculations, working with Excel and SolidWorks (I think I'd like more than a purely CAD draughting job though). The small part of my course that was practical was interesting too, getting a brief go using a milling machine, a lathe and doing a bit of welding. The labs were interesting too.

Drum, yep, my grades were good. I'll look up those (and any other I can find that look interesting) firms.

Motu, I'm assuming you're joking. I saw that other post about you having to choose between two new prospective employees already. (if not, thanks, but it's not what I'm looking for, plus I'm not sure my back would cope with bending over a car engine all day.)

Jump on the yellow pages online, select the industry and location you want to work then go hard sending emails around any company that sounds good, then if they don't reply within 2 weeks go around and show that you are keen. Employers really like this. It will give you a few more options anyway.
