I just ran my '82 XV750 through the testing station - well it had been sitting for 12 months and I wanted to ride it again - and it failed for a small list of problems. The front wheel bearing is noisy and that is an easy fix with a $20 bearing from the bearing shop and it was missing a split pin through the front axle (why didn't I see that?) and the number plate not working (no excuse for not checking that either).
But the biggest bugger is that the front brake hose is one of those fancy braided stainless jobbies and as it has no stamps on it they knocked it back. The testing guy is a good bloke and I don't blame him, but he even admitted that the stainless ones are better than the original as they don't expand at all under pressure but there you have it. Anyway it also needs a new front brake switch and the perch is broken so I may as well get the whole unit from the master cylinder onwards.
I am always on the hunt for better bits for my bikes so if anyone has an old XV under the house or any parts in the garage I would like to hear from you. I still need a front guard, coil cover/reflector thingy, drivers foot pegs, front master cylinder, front brake hose and one tank badge.
