There is vast amounts of research going in to the calibre debate, see a lot in the Janes magazines I get at work.

Of note the new long range kill has been taken by a .338 showing size is not everything.
For those of you that have not yet heard, there is a published report about a new ‘longest kill’ record (at least for unclassified operations) performed by a British sniper Craig Harrison in November 2009. Actually it was two kills on Taliban machine gunners in Afghanistan. The distance was a GPS measured 2706 yards (2475 meters) or 1.56 miles away. Perhaps the more interesting thing about these kills is that they were performed using the L115A3 which is the Accuracy International Super Magnum chambered in 338 Lapua. Most of the 2000+ meter kills, including the previous record set by Rob Furlong, of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, were done using .50 BMG rifles. This does show the long range potential of the 338 Lapua cartridge, especially with the specially developed high power load that the UK uses, though Craig Harrison did admit it was perfect conditions with no wind.

Granted .338 lapua isn't small fry either, and it's long flat trajectory is well known.

Someone was selling a Remington 700 in .300 win mag the other day, that would be fun too. We really need to set up a 600m - 1200m range somewhere and have some real (gun nerd) fun. Bah, I waste too much money on guns I don't use enough as it is.

Speaking of which, Mr Merde must be able to give us an update on the new range's progress by now...

(PS - I'm just jealous of the AWP whore)

I had a look around at family/friends farms in northland a couple of years back on google maps to try find one with some space to do some real long range shooting, it was actually a bloody difficult ask to find that even had that kind of space on them, never mind one usable as a shooting range!

The couple that were even big enough with clear open spaces ended up with houses that were in or near the firing line.

There's only one thing for it, we have to organise a group trip to the Otago high country. We can spend a week out there target shooting, hunting and talking crap.

Sounds good, would need a couple of months to knock out this bastard of a thesis and then a couple more months to get some cash together to get an appropriate rifle...

Edit: I sure with enough browbeating would could get Chris down there to actually prove some of his BP 'tall tales'!

But it is like half the size for a complete round, that counts when you are humping it round.

of note this picture came up when I searched .338 vs .50

Well - first time Ive really come in and had a good look at this thread - tis pretty good.

Im just getting back into shooting since doing it with the old man back when I was a young 'un.

Got the licence the other day and picked up my son a nice wee Ruger 10 22 and threw on a redfield site. He gets to shoot it for the first time this weekend.

Me - Ive been pistol shooting at CSI and from this coming weekend at the Navy range out Whangaparoa.

On the rifle front - got nothing for myself as yet but have a friend with some nice bits. Have been having fun with some H+K 223's as well as some long distance with a .338

In July heading down to gunslingers for long distance shooting comp - and will be using a Barrett .50cal. That Im looking forward to.

Other than that will post some pics a little later. In the meantime - he is a quick vid of the boy having some fun out Southhead.

Sorry about the quality - done on the phone - will try to get some better stuff later this weekend

Welcome to the thread Tank. As a fellow father of impressionable kids with a healthy interest in firearms, I can well imagine how proud you must be of your boy.

I had feeling that new person signing on was your good self. The names were too similar.

So welcome to the NSA site also.

I don't think its an article ie. something which was researched, but rather a piece of direct reporting. I'd have thought the coalition forces would know the Afghans have been sharpshooters for 150 years, and carried some M16s at least. I like this comment though because I've always been puzzled by sheer American firepower:

Solution : Teach all soldiers how to shoot accurately with semi-automatic weapons and issue the G3 with decent optics. Stop reliance on large volumes of full auto fire by all with a light round. You then have penetration / range / fire discipline and don't need to carry huge amounts of ammo. I have used both 7.62 and 5.56 and never used full-auto unless it was belt-fed area coverage.
