Why not handload your 270 with lighter bullets - try http://www.loaddata.com/members/sear...etallicID=3786.
Goats are tough and need some power to knock them over.

I used to have some 110gr loads for the 3006 - pumped along over 3200fps

Unless you want an excuse to buy a new toy of course...

Does one need an excuse to buy a new toy?

Good idea btw. Not enough people play around withtheir rifles and ammo to really get to know it.

All very interesting chaps but what I want to know is what is the best assault rifle? Not to buy of course, just what people know about current military hardware.

    M4?

The weather was great this year, warm days and clear but cold nights. We did OK not as good as we would like but were happy with the total and we all had fun which was the purpose of the trip.

Well......mmmm.....can't argue about its reliability and adaptability. Not accurate over 300m and fires high to the left so I've read. And it was developed in 1947 so its a 60yr old design...although I think most versions are the 1952 model.

It doesn't need to be, it's an Assault Rifle.

The Chinese had a way of compensating for that.

although not an assault rifle, hollywood tells me the mp5 sub machine gun is the weapon to choose when taking on hordes of aliens.

    Older than that.

It's design was based on a german assult rifle from WW2

In late 1943, the MP44 (the most commonly found German assault rifle from the war)

Talking of these types of weapons.

Have you noticed that when fired in the moivies they seem to be able to go full auto for 30 seconds or more. Not too bad for a 30 round magazine (approx) that most have.

    Any one remember "Predator"?

One soldier fires a hand held mini gun and fires for what seems like an eternity. I would hate to have to lug the firearm around let alone the thousands of rounds they must have used in that long and protracted session of firing.

    And the 600-rounds-per-minute (typical) ROF

around 3 seconds from full to empty by my calculations...
