When I was in England in the early 90s everyone used "right" in similar circumstances. "So I was walking along, right, and this guy came up to me, right, so I said "wotcha?" and he said "yeah" and we carried on, right?"
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

With you on that one, there's a sign at work stating "prevent accidents before they happen", as if you can prevent them afterwards. F*cks me off, someone was paid to come up with that. Think I'll rip it down. Also think I should have stayed on holiday.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be quoted out of context, then used against you.

while on that matter, feedback is a redundant word - by the time you hear it it has already been performed

What the fuck do you gain by writing it as "gurl?"). But my old man often sends me a text message when he wants to communicate, and he never abbreviates anything or uses text misappropriations. Neither do I - just don't see the need, and I think it looks stupid and reflects poorly on general intellect. Just my two cents though.
I think "txt spk" is entirely appropriate when used in text messages! The single most valuable linguistic skill that should be taught in schools is CONTEXT. Academic writing for an essay, polite writing in a letter to your grandma, careful spelling and punctuation when applying for a job, shortened words & sentences when sending a text.

Language does change, but knowing what's appropriate is far more important than knowing what's correct.

For example, the person who decided that a sentence in English shouldn't end in a preposition was obviously a Latin-worshipping moron. But other Latin-worshipping morons will judge you if you choose to ignore this arbitrary rule. So when writing to one of them, I carefully mangle my perfectly formed English sentences to make them look more like Latin. You see, it depends what you're trying to achieve at the time. It's all about context.

Oh, and when I send text messages I use txt speak to the people who will understand it. When I want to communicate to the others, I phone them.

oooh! oooh! shoot me! A noun used as a verb!!
