45 road signs in under a kilometre!

Just pray your local council is never as stupid as this...

South Milford in Yorkshire has set a record for “sign clutter”, with no less than 45 road signs being displayed in the space of just over half a mile (about 0.8kms).

Villagers have called for a clear-out of the signs, which North Yorkshire County Council claim are there for safety reasons. Resident Edward French said: "You can only concentrate on a certain number of things, and you're just faced with all this proliferation of signs. If you had to look at everything, you would not be concentrating on the road itself."

Highways bosses at the council have promised to discuss the matter with residents.

How on earth do they expect you to concentrate on the road, when faced with an average of a sign every 17 metres? I suppose when the inevitable accidents start, they'll put up another sign to show the presence of a speed camera!

(NB. According to the RAC Federation, this doubles the previous record, which was at least on an rural road rather than right through the middle of a village)

Does it really take you that long that you can't just glace at it and carry on?

I just did the maths on this.

If you were travelling at 45kmph, then you'd have about 90 seconds in the zone with 45 signs.

Which gives you 2 seconds per sign.

How much time do you need to stop? According to the figures I just found:

"The average reaction time from seeing an emergency situation to actually placing your foot on the brake pedal is 0.7 seconds At 30mph, 44 feet per second, you will have travelled 30 feet before you even take action, and a further 45 feet before the brakes bring the car to a halt."

So you have 1.3 seconds to assimlate everything between each sign. Not a lot of time to take on board everything that is happening around you, let alone actually register what yet another road sign is telling you before your senses are battered by yet another one, telling you something else!

Point being is that I would imagine most road signs are obvious and require no action as such, such as one way street signs, or speed limit signs, these would be things you already know.

I agree it's a fair few signs, but anyone that crashes and blames it on the signs doesn't deserve a license.
