So then how can you explain the problems with the Vodem and the Woosh services? Couldn't be that they're both poorly run as well could it? Wouldn't that break down the tall poppy syndrome here that anything that grows too big should be torn down?

I'm sorry, you're completely wrong. I left Telecom under a cloud in '95, primarily because I used to smart mouth Theresa Gattung. At the time a I was a Network Strategy Architect, and we had more than enough money to begin the process of developing an infrastructure to support the kind of Internet connectivity. 4 people were entrusted to develop a plan to develop strategies to build a network base that would support future Internet developments. I was one of them and I failed to convince anyone in Telecom that the Internet would supplant voice traffic as the major traffic carried by the Telecom network. We all failed. All of us left to do other things, feeling like utter failures.

The biggest issue was that the money has all been shipped overseas to placate "Investors". The NZ Government made a huge mistake when they sold Telecom and there has been practically no development, no actual change to switch architecture and design since I was there. In development of Infrastructure vital to the development of a modern economy, because there was no money in it for the owners. At a conservative estimate $5 Billion dollars got shipped out in the time I was there. We needed 900 million to redevelop the core switch environment.

It didn't happen so here we are now.

Do not buy into the crap that we don't have, or generate enough money to build a superior technology base that will suit NZ. There problem is that developing and implementing the technology doesn't make dividends for shareholders.

What I don't understand, if Telecom is such a big earner, why was it sold in the first place? A quick cash out and the money used on other things?

Ok Jim, you obviously know more about this than I, but from what I've read above, it was your fault?

Well, I'll see what happens this week.

I'd been on dialup forever, and this week we finally go for Telstra's HighSpeed Plan - 4Mbps down, 2Mbps up, 10GB cap, $2.95 per GB thereafter.

Currently my speeds according to the consumer.org.nz test are:

39kbps down, 584 kpbs up (wtf??? - tested three times and this is the worst result).

I'll post the results after I upgrade.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

And what about that stupid bitch from Telecom on Campbell Live. What the fuck was she wearing? Was she on holiday at the beach? I didn't think it was more possible for Telecom to hire a more stupid, incompetent, uglier home keeper than Gattung.

I'm getting sick of woman running this country. Get back in the kitchen bitches. That's what God wanted and what we bloody well deserve.

    Thank you

i work in the it industry and every single person i have asked about broadband has moaned about the fullspeed change and even problems before that. telecoms dslam bins can simply not handle it. if you are on the remuera exchange you got ****ed over for about a 3 months while they upgraded the stacks. even now it goes slow sometimes and you get booted off for a day (no wan ip even if you reset router/hard off/on etc) every now and then. it was better before the speed change.

when it first changed over i got bandwidth less than that of a 56k modem and much less reliability to boot... it took a few weeks for it to get back up. my atainable line speed 9536 kbps / 1032 kbps and actual speed is the max of 7616 kbps / 160 kbps cus i'm 996m round trip from the exchange. and yes 996's are ***y.

    http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/module-speedtest.phtml

that test gave me 1589kbps down and 132kbps up. my record was about 6 one flukey time, 2am i'll get like 3+. in real speed from normal sites i'll get around 350kb/sec sometimes and down to 60-80 in real busy times. not the service i pay for eh? didn't know this was israeli telecom running the show.

at peak like now... well yeah.. can go down even less to around 800kbps. line speed is still '7mbit+' cough cough.

also traffic shaping from hell too, **** you telecum.i work in the it industry and every single person i have asked about broadband has moaned about the fullspeed change and even problems before that. telecoms dslam bins can simply not handle it. if you are on the remuera exchange you got ****ed over for about a 3 months while they upgraded the stacks. even now it goes slow sometimes and you get booted off for a day (no wan ip even if you reset router/hard off/on etc) every now and then. it was better before the speed change.

Jim, you paint a similar picture to others I have spoken to who were, or are on the payroll today. I think as boomer and co have stated, we are paying for a service which is not being delivered, and to top it off, it's miles behind the "developed" world anyway.

Everything that boomer and Jim2 have said is true.

Telecom are fucking pathetic. Weasel, stop defending them, they are fucking thieves. They make shit loads of money and they pay that incompetent fucking troll and her minions a shit load to sit around and do fuck all except lie to the public and lick the ball sacks of their shareholders.

Their front line customer service staff cop heaps of shit because of their strategists incompetence. My springer spaniel would make a better CEO than that stinking gattung bitch, and I bet she can't even fetch a fucking stick without denying there ever was a stick or that it had ever been thrown. It would cost too much to throw a stick and we don't have the infrastructure to retrieve it. Mutt.

I feel for you Jim2 (and not just cos you're a bald ginger and not as good on the drums as me), it must suck to have to look back on a smug whore like that proving you right at yours, and the rest of the country's, expense.

BTW, I'm moving to Orcon tonight. I'm sick of the fuckin timeouts on this Xtra bullshit.

You gotta feel just as sorry for rural dial-up customers with no alternative. The line quality seems to be getting worse for many of my "farming" customers. Not a hope in hell of them getting DSL in the forseeable future either never mind fibre optic.

Never mind 3G, Vodyphoney would make a fortune if they improved rural coverage and flogged reasonably priced unlimited GPRS plans (would work nicely with them vodem things).

I'm unofficially telling customers to use any DNS server but the Xtra ones. The Xtra pop3 server seems fakked to. The spam filtering is almost non-existant. I'm officially telling customers not to use an @xtra.co.nz email address if at all possible. Finally, why the hell can't they implement a decent IMAP server?

And I might add, it's not just ADSL Telecom are screwing with. At work, we run multiple data circuits to our various customers. We have just been told that these circuits won't be available soon and if we don't upgrade (to a more expensive service) they'll increase the price.

Can you imagine if any of us tried that on with our customers? If I did I'd be out of business in a week and have to work for a prick like me.

SO? we all moan about it, but what can we actually do about it??

Im on woosh and its next to useless, I have more wires attached to my wirelesss modem than a wired one and the speed is actually worse than that of telecum cuntomers!

    Telecum is next to useless.

Lines throughout the country need upgrading just to cope.

Wirelless is not widespread enough and reliable enough let along trusted enough by the public to be a viable alternative.

This broadband fuckup is just another example of a market forces fuckup. We saw much the same sort of thing with the rail. A resource plundered for foreign investors that New Zealand had to regain control over the tracks. If what J2 has said is true and I have no reason to doubt him someone needs standing up against the wall and asked to give an explanation prior to the ready, aim, etc.

As for the woman who appeared on Campbell Live Some speech therapy along with a new wardrobe might be in order.
