And it runs on copper to the exchange too .

With that technology which apparently has been in use overseas for the last 3 yrs, orcon are looking to do The whole deal thing...phone,internet connection and TV for 1 package price.

VDSL runs on fibre optic cable. Caerphiily in Sth Wales has been wired for this technology as a test case for British Telecom, population about 10,000.

Thank you Dover me old mate,

I have no problem with your examples except for the inclusion of England. Surely this nation, while once a shining example of progressiveness, has now become nothing more than a reservoir for the worlds misfits and social rejects.

A country that holds a very special place in the world. The dumping pot for all those with excess population.

Jim2 - I had a friend that explained all that to me so I'm glad you posted the facts. He is in the telecommunications field and an expert - we often have long conversations on this - ah correction - he talks, I listen, but manage to ask the odd intelligent question!! He told me Telecom would not listen to advisors and couldn't conceive how big internet would get.

I had to laugh at our fucking retard minister cunliffe going on about how we need fibre to the door.

FUCK fibre to the door, if anything that would just exacerbate the problem because every cock would be trying to leech at 1gb/s, and we'd still have no backhaul capacity.. A decent ADSL2 connection is fine for me Hell even ADSl that actually worked at connect speed would do..

What we need is more backhaul bandwith, and a fuckload of that.. We need much lower contention ratios (I'm thinking single digits not 1:150).

Telecom needs to A: Lay and/or liven up a hell of a lot more backbone fibre in NZ, and B: Liven the entire southern cross cable up.

Personally I think Telecom should be "compulsorily acquired" and renationalised by the govt as a not for profit SOE.. It still charges us like normal but all that money is plowed back into improving our national backbone etc. We'd have world class service in a year or two :-)

Mission Heights currently has the fastest internet in the country, with Telecom trialling fibre in all new houses in this suburb. And they get it free for a year too.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I kept the same number, on the same exchange, got charged $45 for the privilege and STILL my billing address was not changed. Generally when I move house I like my mail to come with me. The blatant rip off charges are insulting enough but to cock up the change of address in the process is nothing but incompetence.

And as for the "Go Large" dsl plan. I think you should rename it "Go Elsewhere" because that is what I expect the majority of your customers will be doing once they experience the pathetic performance. Sure, it's quick during the day (when I was off work sick) but try to use it at any other time and it is, and pardon my language here, completely fucking useless. I've never had so many connection timeouts, not even in the days of shitty old dial up in the Shetland Islands. The endless excuses that Telecom spout to justify their lack of investment in infrastructure is disgusting, especially given the salaries of some of their incompetent, lying, thieving arsehole executives and the share dividends they pay out.

I pity the customer service staff that bare the brunt of the frustration of ripped off, exasperated Telecom customers and await the day that they can go and work for a telecommunications provider that can supply a solution that would be acceptable in the third world.

Telecom should stick to flashy advertising, long lunches and corporate bullshit. Phones and internet don't appear to be within their capabilities.

I'm off to Orcon (again!). Ciao.

PS Note my cellphone number is Vodafone, the lesser of the two evils.

I worked for the scumbags too, ending my career as product manager for mobile broadband. Boy did I have to polish a turd to push that product (Sierra wireless, Gtran data cards and moile phone plug in internet access). If the jerks at the top had listened to the planning people rather than being interested in shoveling money at the investors back in the day, then our current predicament wouldn't be here.

I hear very valid rumors that even Russia has better connectivity than we do! I have heard of orcons plan but I don't think they have the cash to play it out and I have also heard of a rumbling plan from actrix (my opinion the best ISP going) regarding connectivity infrastructure but again I don't think they have the coin to impliment it effectively either!

My 2 cents! Telecom chews up and spits out its brightest staff!

BTW Jim2 did you work with a Blonde guy called Allan (last name known but not posted) by any chance?

I'm in the 4% (didn't bother voting) ... Go DIALUP! ... Same speed all the time, predictable consistency I tell ya!

Edit: In fact, my dialup has improved recently (connects now at 48kbps instead of 42kbps) since Telstra replaced some boards at the exchange my street plugs into We had an Internet outage but ordinary phone still worked - that was a hard yarn to tell the tech support people because no body believed me that I had an outage until 25% of the street started complaining
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.

Didn't Telecom LOSE $1 billion in their abortive Australian foray!

Yes. Exactly 1/14th of what they made overall during the time they were in Aus. Not revenue. Profit.
