Just out of interest NH, when are you planning on getting your bike out of storage? - often theres a couple of weeks of really nice weather in August and it would be a shame to miss them.

I saw some sun today so took the bike in for a WOF, looks like I need some new front bearings - so getting that sorted. have ordered a new helmet and boots for my pillion so will be set when the sun really comes out.

have finally got settled properly in Dunedin again - takes longer than you think. Ready to start riding again.

Looks like about 3 days of high winds but warmer temps coming up this week - if its fine and calm over the weekend there could well be a bit of ice free riding to be had. Still got to watch for grit but thats not as bad as that invisible slippery stuff.

There sure is a big thaw on around the Waitaki Valley area at the moment.

It feels like we have just gone over the hump of winter, here's hoping from a bike riding perspective anyway.

Must be getting old, this is the first time I have let the winter get the better of me, bike-wise. (didn't even have a day ride to the Brass!)

Went for a nice wee ride down to Waimate yesterday to watch the kids and grand-kids battling it out on the motor-cross track, bloody good day out.

Bike went like a (rocket?) Tiger, behaved just the way a big blue pussy should.

Hope to go to Dunedin next Tuesday for a meeting, so I hope your weather down there is going to be nice to me.

Might see some of you about down there Cheers John.

    Some ice!

Wish you both luck with the winter dides! I walk each morning, found about 100m of the black variety on an uphill stretch so left the scoot at home today, for the fifth time this winter. Good to hear you out and about. Stay upright and skid free. Cheers

Last winter I took the cage to work a total of six times. So far this winter I have already more than doubled that number. Black ice yesterday, and probably could have taken it today. It was only -5.5 , so quite rideable, when I left home this morning, and as it turned out, the road was relatively clear of ice.

    Watch your back!

The other day I went for a wee ride around Lake Aviemore down to Kurow and there was quite a lot of black ice around, especially just West of the old Waitaki village.

While riding through there picking my line through the ice, a prick in a Falcon nearly ran me off the road.

That is the biggest danger in the ice, bloody cages etc, taking you out from behind.

In between me riding through there and coming back a local farmer (of long standing) lost it with a horse float on, the float jackknifed and tipped upside down, broke away from the truck and skidded 40meters down the road.

The horse was still in it and was OK! (Well, sort of.)

Lucky he was taking it pretty easy or it could have been real messy.

They got the horse out, tipped the float onto it's wheels, coupled it up, loaded the horse and headed back home to Otematata.

Two minutes after they left the scene a big truck and trailer unit got into difficulties in there too, just as well the float was not there then!

Funny thing was the float was one I built for the farmer about twenty years ago, happily it did not suffer too much damage.

The horse just walked straight back on, no problem, trusting aren't they!

I rode back through there about an hour later and wondered what all the scratching was on the road.

As I said, watch out from behind when tracking your way through ice on the road. Bastards! Cheers John.
