Lost keys - How to into the tank?

Anyone had this problem before?

Last night I got home and my keys had popped out of the ignition somewhere between Manukau and Grey Lynn!

The ignition is pretty loose, so my old key out of my stolen zxr fits, but I can't get into the gas tank.

Any ideas appreciated. I'm thinking of taking it to a locksmith and getting them to make it open with any suitably shaped object

Ok the way to do it is remove the ignition barrel and get a key cut to fit it propperly -it will then fit the tank as well.
That said its pretty unusual for a key that works the ignition not to work the gas tank --have ya tried it both ways round?--and wiggling it around a bit?

Actually thats quite understandable - the ignition lock gets used every single time you ride but not the tank lock. Also some people have a big bunch of keys on the keyring - all that weight flopping around wearing the ignition lock as the bike is ridden.

go back in time and get a spare key cut, so if your keys are lost/stolen you still have a spare.

However I think if I went back in time I would be far too busy to get a key cut with all the other fuckups I would be running around fixing, including taking that corner wrong on that KB ride and so on and so forth...

The ignition is much more sloppy than the tank, hence the keys falling out.

Looks like the locksmith is the way to go at the moment

If you do change your mind and end up going back in time, get a key cut at a locksmith rather than just somewhere like mitre 10. If you've got an original bike key, it will likely have a number stamped on the side, and the locksmith will be able to look up the specifications for that particular key and cut a new key based on the specifications rather than just cutting one based on the old worn-out key's profile.

I have the same thing happen to me with the key's being able to pop out of the ignition barrel, found them twice traped between the fairings and the engine. Any idea's on how to make the key's stay in the barrel?

Oh and if you do get key's cut, use the new key, and not the original. That way if/when you need to get another copy made, it's a copy of the original, not a copy of copy. Goo idea to also keep a copy on your keyring too if it's popping out

If they can come out on their own. Wouldn't it be easier to just use them to turn the ignition on then put them in your pocket? No chance of them falling out then (well a little, depends on the pocket and riding style I suppose).

I lock wire mine in place on my race bike--prolly a tad impractical for a roadie though

I have a little string with a plastic clip to clip my keys on so as to catch them if they do fall out. So as to try and avoid above problem.
