While we're on the graphics topic, anyone had a crack with Doom 3 yet?

Far as I can see from the previews it's Doom I/II with some blatant ripping-off of Half-Life and better graphics... ho hum. It was fun 10 (?) years ago...

Yip, got it last week. While I have to play it at the crappiest settings possible, even though I would say my computer is far from crap. It is just the same as D2 and the original. Just really really cool graphics and scary monsters that still run at you when you blow their heads off. IMO it is cool and what I expected. If you want something challenging play farcry.

What are your machine specs, and what settings do you manage to play it at to get what framerate?

No way I'm going to be playing it on my poor little home box but I'm toying with the idea of picking up a copy for work, where I have a 3GHz P4 with RAM up the wazoo and a GeForce 4 card of some description. Will that do the trick?

The GF4 will be your downfall jrandom. I got an XP1700+ slightly overclocked with 1gb of DDR and a Radeon 9700PRO. My main bottleneck is the CPU. At 1024x768 with all special settings turned off and quality set to low, i get 25fps in the demo. If i drop the res to 800x600 and turn on a few eye candy features i can get up to 33fps if i am lucky. Pretty average really. Sometimes it drops to 3 or 4fps in the fight scenes. My mate on his 2.6ghz P4 and 9800PRO gets about 55fps on 1024x768 and most things turned on with 2xAA. So it is definately a game that not many systems can play at good quality atm.

But damn, when the quality is turned up it looks so awesome. Nothing can describe it.

I've found the gameplay to be a bit repetitive. It's like a monter will spawn and you'll just expect 8 more of the same fucking thing to come after you.. Doesn't seem like there's much thinking required so far anyway. I'm looking forward to HL2 a bit more.

I'm running an xp3200+, 1gig of ram and a 64mb ti4200 and it's smooth at 800x600 medium quality. Kinda hanging out to get a gf 6800gt some time when I can get some cash tho.

I installed dx9c before doom3 and everything still seems to be working fine, so I don't have any problems with it.

Nvidia 6800 Ultra and the Radeon x800 XT at the cards to get. It is a coin toss as to which is better - and it largely depends which game you play as to which has the best FPS.

I have bought the x800 PCI Express Card (waiting for the release of the new Intel Chipset) which will leave AGPX8 in the dark ages - reverting back to PCI slots.

Nvidia Card is gr8 - however it requires 2 molex connectors to power the board - and neither of these is allowed to be split powering any other peripherals in the box - and you are expected to have a CPU up around 470w min.

    Just food for thought
