I was having a mate on yesterday about whether he had a romantic streak or not and as he wasn't going to send his wife flowers - cos shes not into it I said he could send them to me instead. All said in fun. This morning I got a txt very early from him and he'd taken a photo of a carnation in his garden and sent it to me. It made my day. Just a thoughtful gesture and wished me a happy day!!

Another friend txt me and said Happy Halloween!!

    As Chaucer said:

"For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne's day
Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate."

Seven hundred years ago a cynical social observer thought St Valentine's day was for fools. This reaffirms my desire to complete that time machine, just so I can ask Chaucer for some pointers.

After some research I've found that there were three St Valentines, all of them martyrs, all of them idiots.
    Parlement of Foules --
309 For this was on seynt Volantynys day
310 Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make

Almost -- I've seen `bryd' as `foul' in some editions, but it's definitely meant as `fowl', not `fool. The same goes for the title; `Parliament of Fowls'. I didn't really get the impression he was saying St Valentine's day was for fools.

    Here's the original poem: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Parliament_of_Fowles

Here's a translation into modern prose (as not everybody's too hot with their Middle English of the late 1300s):

    u4ea - I really hope that's a euphamism for something!!

BMW - Aww come on I gots plenty of hugs fer everybody! You are special to me - even it's not reciprocated...
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

You dick. I know that. Let me have my fun and get back under your rock!

Plus, I might add, I did that quote from memory. It reads much better in Middle English.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

Nice -- from memory -- I had to go and look it up, despite reading it in secondary school one year, then the next, then recently at university...

And stop co-opting ancient literary figures into your own cynical world-view! Bloody world-weary middle-aged people

Oh well, I don't think I'll be able to repeat this years Valentine's in a hurry.

You see, last year I entered an online competition with one of our suppliers.

And yesterday I got this email:

Great News! We are pleased to announce that you are the lucky prize winner of our New Year's competition for a weekend for two at the Ruby Bay Lodge, Nelson staying in the Vineyard Cottage.

This prize weekend includes return flights from Wellington, 2 nights accommodation, car hire, sumptuous lunch platter with wine upon arrival, daily gourmet breakfast, stocked chef’s pantry, hand made chocolates, fresh fruit, flowers and fine toiletries.

I am sooooo in the good books today.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.
