    520 conversion and lighter sprockets

Would your average rider (me) notice any difference by going to a 520 chain size and running lighter (renthal) sprockets?

I've been doing 1:55 around old Taupo track on Metzeller M1's which werent really confidence inspiring. I know im not a Fitzgerald or Sam Smith, just wanting to know if the change is significant enough to really notice?

Is the difference in handling or acceleration? Im guessing its somewhere in the 0.1%-1% range?

Hard to say if you'd notice the difference without knowing anything about your riding. But going to a 520 is the way for racing for a few reasons.
530 is used for durability on road bikes, but it's quite a bit heavier and bulkier than 520. A good quaility 520 chain is more than up to the task, and being lighter will help both the acceleration and handling of your bike.
    Do it....every bit helps right?

there are quite a few companies on ebay selling sets of sprockets and chains for around $190NZ. The vortex range carries from 45T-52T in stock, and up to 74 on order. Also looks pretty shit hot and if you want you can get em anodised if you want!

Just had the chain and sprockets done at cycletreads. 520 is standard on the ZX6R and had to specially source the rear sprocket for me and it was alloy. All for $230 including fitting. Hardly seems worth the effort to source it from overseas... the $NZD isn't nearly as strong as it use to be against the greenback !

I did a 520 kit on my SP, but this went from 532 & saved , erm, think it was 1.25kg, seemed like a worthwhile thing to do esp as was doing a gearing change.

one. I'd only ever use decent brand chain & sprockets if you want to to last, on a racebike swapping gearing maybe not so important. As mine is roadbike I went for AFAM & DID x ring. Lesser quality & bad chain alignment will kill ally.

Yeah I think I read that story of chronic neglect (I'll look after it much better if he can't be trusted with it). Over tightening, misalignment and especially attaching a powerful V twin to the chain aren't a happy place to operate.

I did the 520 conversion on my R6,mainly because I raced it last year & it
is easy to get 520 sprocket options,I managed to score a range of genuine
Yamaha kit sprockets, rear annodised gold, check my picture on myprofile
I dont think you would notice a difference, with seat of the pants riding, will only help when using a range of sprockets,
Alloy sprockets dont last as long
The biggest difference I have noticed with all the mods I have done to bikes, was when I put a set of lightweight Marvic rims on my ZXR400,transformed the thing, turned, better, accelerated better & looked cool too

    i went 520 with a -1/+2 running vortex sprockets on the gixxer(stock 525)

Going small chain makes next to fuck all difference, unless you are at the real high end of racing, Saves a bit of weight, might total 1kg if ya lucky, which is next to nothing.

Some people complain that going small chain means will die quicker but still depends on how you treat it.

well in my opinion if theres owt wrong with the existing chain/sprockets it aint worth it at your stage.
Now a bit of a dumb admission--Ever since i built my bike ive been using a srad front end along with stock front wheel. using a k4 gixxer wheel as my WET wheel
Yea dumb bugger aye??--swapped em over and like bistard says--suddenly it turns faster

current chain and sprokets are O.K. but are going to need replacing soon-ish, if it's easy enough to get the sprokets for my bike in a 520 size im gonna give it a go when the time comes to replace what is there at the moment.

I went from a 525 to a 520 on my 400. It might have been me dreaming, but the bike felt crisper.

I reckon you'd get a bigger gain from stickier tyres, and twisting the throttle harder and earlier
