I heard on the radio on the way home from work that a couple of women in the UK have been charged with something or other for videoing a couple of toddlers fighting and actually encouraging them to fight, handing them things to hit each other with, and giving them a telling off when they tried to stop fighting... wtf? Maybe the govt just doesn't want crime to be controlled, they are doing nothing about it and they are stopping the public from doing anything about it.

Its funny how Greg Carvell isn't allowed to defend himself without the police trying to prosecute him, but Jarrod Gucker (26) who hit five people when he cut loose with a pellet gun in a shopping mall car park only got 200 hours of community work.
According to the papers;
The incident happened at a suburban mall after an exchange of words between the occupants of the car Guckert was in, and a group in the car park.

The car drove off but then returned and Guckert fired pellets from an Airsoft BB pistol.



I know there is a difference between a .45 pistol and a BB gun, but one event was done out of a genuine fear for his life, the other was done as a revenge attack for someone saying somthing. The balance just seems a little off to me.

Well I use to live in the Auckland, Napier, Wangangui, and Hamilton... and have travelled the the rest via bike... and done the same to the south island... and not once had a problem to this day.

Unfortunately it happens everywhere but I think it's time for us all to stand up and say we're not prepared to put up with it. So many times people don't report things to the police because "nothing will happen" - no, maybe not, but at least it gets reported and if a pattern emerges, something may be done.

We live in a rural area and there is still crime here - farmers out milking come home to find their houses have been burgled, new home being built are entered and stuff nicked, and recently my husband's old work car (about 20 years old and worth FA) got keyed all along one side. Why? It was parked legally, it's not flash - probably done by some kid wagging school because he was bored.

It pisses me off because so much of the crime has no excuse - you can understand (but not condone) someone stealing food if they are hungry, but most of these crimes are sheer vandalism or just a way of making extra income to spend on drugs. Bring back the days where the local cop knew everyone and what was going on and could kick the offenders arses and send them home to behave themselves!

Maybe there appears to be more arseholes in D'Auckland than elsewhere, but that's just because there are more people living here that in other parts of NZ, and maybe at a higher concentration.

Yep, I never think of myself as an Aucklander, I always think of myself as a Kiwi.
My wife and/or I have lived and worked in Wales, England, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Luxembourg, Namibia, China and more and travelled extensively.

Frankly the only other country I've been to that I'd consider living in indefinitely is Canada but for me, that's just too cold and close to the Yanks.

I'm a proud Kiwi NOT a proud Aucklander, this, like any other Kiwi city, is just a location.

Uhhh, not so... crime rate as indicated per capita is generally not bigger for bigger population cities. For example have a look at here:

New York is the most populous cities in that list yet, the crime rate for New York is one of the lowest per capita (2917 per 100,000).

according to the graph there the offence rate for New Zealand in 2000 is about 110 per 1000 which equates to about 11,000 per 100,000. Now you can't tell from those how comparable these statistics are since the definition of offence on the new zealand website and the definition of crime in the American site are not available but still it illustrates a point that lower population does not mean less crime rate.

However the american site by itself allows us to examine the crime rates in the cities listed at least.

For example:

New York City - has a population density of: 10,316/km² The crime index (crime rate per 100,000 people) is: 2917 for year 2000.

Los Angeles - has a population density of: 3,165/km² The crime index is: 4,809. - almost double the crime rate of NY city but about a third of the population density of NY.

Phoenix - has a population density of: 1,188.4/km² The crime index is: 7,664.

From a rough look at above one could almost say that it appears that the higher the population density the lower the crime rate. Of course above are only a few examples and further study would be required to make ANY conclusions, but saying that more crime rate comes with higher population is definately an unfounded belief.

I'm a born and bred aucklander who moved down to palmy a year and a half ago. I have never been assaulted or been a victim of ANY crime. I think its just a bit of luck and the fact that my two dogs seem to scare people (but they are wusses) Palmy aint great as far as safety is concerned but i'd rather here than papatoe or manukau or mangare(sp)
