From July? (maybe June) vehicles are assigned a rating between 1 and 4 based on how safe they are (combination of ANCAP and NZ crash history).

Basically, the more dangerous vehicles will cost more, safer ones cost less. As a general policy newer vehicles should cost less, older ones more, but there are some other factors. My dad's Merc wagon, 2001, is one of the safest categories, my 2008 Hiace van... well, I'm surprised I'm still living apparently.

For you, are you sure you're comparing like for like? Utes/vans cost a bit more than normal cars, diesel costs more than petrol equivalent etc.

Your reminder notice for the full year will be at current rates.

Pay rego up till the 1st of july, or as close as you can get to there.

After 1st july, the rates drop, so you are better off paying for a full year then.

My car comes in at $68 for the acc levy for a full year.

There is a list on the nzta website with a 1-4 catergory
have a look there, will give you the price.

And yeah its based on ncap and nz crash stats.

Pretty simple, its about how much it will cost acc in an accident, crash the tank and you'll walk away, crash the poxy rice burner and you won't quite be dead, costing acc a fortune while you learn to walk again. For example my old terrano, rollover safety is crap so if i put it on its lid I'll be dead, if I hit a jappy tin can they'll be fucked but I'll walk away, either way is cheap for acc so the levy is lower
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

Mmmm not quite, people in the jappy tin can are supposedly safer (assuming a much newer car) because of all the airbags and stuff. It'll write off the car certainly, but there are likely to be less damage to the occupants of the tin can than to you. Lol especially if its me you hit ;-) :-P

oh fantastic I'll always have a van (my last and only car was a 3.3 Victor).

My car has a 5 star safety rating but only level 3 ACC fraud.
Maybe its because I would survive but have to take some time off work.
Need A car that's certain death to get the cheap rate most likely.

On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!
