In fact, "Us" vs "Them" type discussions get nowhere. Maori have always claimed that the cigarettes and alcohol that the white people brought in affected them, and the whites were much more forceful in their arrival, both in NZ and Aussie. And I suspect the Mariori would have something to say about the Maori arriving as well, if there were any of them left.

What I'm saying is, that 2 cultures living in the same piece of real estate will always take adjusting and getting used to, and the recent immigrations have been much kinder to the host culture than previous ones have been. Incidentally, the people complaining are often of the previous "invading" culture.

Either live and try to understand / learn to deal with new arrivals (most problems with other cultures stem from misunderstandings), or decide that you don't want them and adjust immigration policy acordingly. I suspect we're stuck with the former option.

Edit: I don't mean newcomers get to run the place, but it's not realistic to expect people to "kiwi-nize" instantly, especially when they get ignored for not being "kiwi" enough. The vast majority arrive WANTING to learn and integrate with the local culture, but find walls put up at every turn, so retreat back into their own cultural groups of friends. Ones that have bumped into people who've helped them adapt have done very well! Some can even drive!

My forefathers were a bunch of drunken Irish ship jumpers in the Hawkesbay (well they had to jump ship cos it caught fire!) during the late 1800's! I think they would be a little dissapointed with todays generation and their attitudes, but they would probably be too drunk and fighting among themselves to have noticed anyway!!!!!
