Question Wanted: Cheap Commuter asap (ChCh)

    Hi guys

My car got stolen the other day and i decided to buy a motorbike for my daily commuting in and out of polytech.
I'm on my learners licence, so i need something up to 250cc. I've got $2000 cash and up to $30 finance a week.
Anything is considered, as it is pretty urgent.
Where would be a good place here in christchurch to buy a first bike under these conditions? Does anyone have something suitable for sale?
If so, give me a txt on 027 325 0810

    Thanks 4 ur advice

    Cool

GN250 is a great wee learner bike and cheap $3500 brand new....

Check out the bike shops, they are sure to have one sitting there.
Second hand ones are quite a lot cheaper to buy.

I would suggest a 250cc VIRAGO cruiser but they are dearer to buy brand new. But they are a great for city riding too.

the new gn250's are crap, I saw one of them down near work last week, thought, yeah that looks like an early 80's one, looked at the rego - nope, it was a 2004 model, every piece of chrome was extremely badly flaked and had some serious issues with very bad rust, I couldn't believe a bike could fall apart that quickly, so if you are going to get a gn, get one of the early 90's ones, at least they don't rust, and the engines are just as strong

Looked at the new cheapie Yamaha? Not that I'm necessarily endorsing it (other than how it *has* to be better than a GN250). It's $3.5k IIRC.

    Or get a scooter.

Saw a CBR250 (R or RR) at this place near the Big Yellow down town. Price unknown as it wasn't lined up for readability from the window (shop was closed at 8pm when I cycled past).

There's a big demand for 250's and so the prices are high.

We just sold our Suzuki FXR150 to a lad in Chch and he's wrapt with it. The FXR is a faired racey looking sports bike, goes like stink, is a great learning tool.

It has the best dash of any bike (still) made. It's all digital, tells you what gear you're in and it has a fuel gauge! Unheard of stuff on some 20 thosand dollar bikes. Generally all the FXR speedos read 10kmh low, easy to get used to.

The 99-02models go on TradeMe for around $2,000 (bought ours for $1,800, sold it within a day of listing for $2,200). I wouldn't spend any more than that on a learner anyway.

Is it a 'real' bike? I rode ours from Gisborne to Napier and halfway back to Wellington before putting it on the trailer. It was hard to stop me smiling.

There are lots of options, this is just another of them - good hunting

thanks for your replys guys. yeah i was thinking of a sporty one. not too much into the gn's of what i've heard i'd rather buy a virago but they're out of my price range and off roading is fun but too much maintenance and a pain in the butt for daily commuting.

That FXR sounds pretty cool, CBR sounds solid too. Does anyone have one of them or a similar one for sale or has spotted one for cheap somewhere?

i'll definitely check out what they've got at just motorcycles, thanks for the tip!

    cheers

What he said man. Keep an eye on Trademe. I'll chat to a friend of mine who wants to upgrade from his FXR
