Mary E. Peters, the US Secretary of Transportation has called for free or heavily discounted DOT certified helmets or driver safety training with the purchase of every new motorcycle sold in the United States
"Helmets and proper training are just as important as brakes or headlights when it comes to the well-being of motorcyclists," Peters - who noted that the helmet she was wearing when she had an accident in 2005 more than likely prevented serious injury - said. "We shouldn't be letting any customer take a bike out of the store without a helmet as part of the package. Safety shouldn't have to be an option when purchasing a motorcycle."
Of course, with many states refusing to make helmet wear mandatory, the impact of handing over a free helmet is debateable. If this ruling is made law, start looking on EBay for bargains as an awful lot of unused helmets are put up for auction.
