Zumo compatible Garmin City Navigator New Zealand v3

    Hey All,

I'm an American planning a trip to NZ in April. I'm thinking about getting the Zumo 550, and I'm looking into getting the maps for NZ. Looks like Garmin charges a lot for this...

    http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ma...NewZealand.jsp

Anyone know if this can be rented? Anyone have an SD card that I can borrow for the 2.5 week trip? :-) Beers would definitely be provided...

    - Thanx

Archer - Tony doesn't rent the cards, only sells them.

I don't have one presently, but am looking to buy the Zumo. I don't know the difference between city nav or inter city nav...

Hm. Those raw track maps could be useful for my upcoming trip...

I'm facing the same thing for our Euro trip, you just have to bite the bullet and fork out the cash. It may be cheaper to buy a Zumo with NZ maps installed, then get US maps when you get home.

    hi
    try this http://www.pcpages.com/graemewi/index.htm
I have used these for a couple of years and they work pretty well.
Doesnt have POI (although I think someone has a POI file for download somewhere) and all the extra stuff Garmin has but its got 99% of the roads in NZ.
Not auto-routable. You will have to use your eyeballs.
Check this guy out as well http://www.nzgpsmaps.com/main.html
Thinking of the Zumo as well. Not too bad.
    good luck

I use this guy's maps. IMO the last auto-routing version is finally worth the money I paid for it. Best of all, the guy keeps working on updates like a busy beaver and unlike garmin distributes them free of charge. Besides there is "Made in NZ" factor.

I have the freebie open source maps from this site loaded onto my eTrex legend.
They cover pretty much all New Zealand.
It is not auto routing, or street searchable, but you can search by POI and towns/cities.
I do my route planning using a set of AA district maps, and then the GPS to keep me going in the general direction.

Afterall, getting slightly lost is half the adventure.

That seems to work just fine, and best of all, it's free.

If you are something with more "power" he has a "pre Alpha" set of auto routing and searchable maps available, but these need the flasher Garmin mapping models with at least 24mb to run them.
You will also need mapsource to upload them.

    Hope that helps you.

Is anyone interested in buying my Garmin City Navigator NZ v3 CD ROM from me after the trip? I think I can get it for around 250 US, which I believe is cheaper than you guys have to pay.

    Just an idea...

If you are interested in buying my Zumo 550 for what I paid in the US, I'd be willing to do that as well... Not sure if it's worth it for you guys or not...

Hi $250 US converts to $363 NZ today. You can buy these maps in NZ for $290 NZ. If you buy and want to sell on the buyer can only use them once. (they have a lock on them so can only be used twice.) I would be interested in buying it off you when you are done with them. Be great to meet up with you when you here.

Hi, first post here. The Open Project maps of NZ are free and auto-routing. They also include over 40,000 Points of Interest.

Both the map and the POI are separate but linked Open Projects meaning they are free and the users can contribute to them.

All of NZ is about 35MB, including the POI.

Information on the street maps can be seen here: http://www.gwprojects.org/gps/index.html

This assumes you have Garmin Trip and Waypoint Manager (MapSource) installed already. Most of you with Garmin GPS units will have but if not, it can be legally downloaded for free from the Garmin site: First download & install Training Center. Close Training Center then download and install the latest MapSource update. You now have Trip and Waypoint Manager. Follow with the street map above. Garmin also have an excellent MapSource tutorial video free to download.

The POI project begins here at Zenbu: http://www.zenbu.co.nz/

    * NZ Open Project street maps have just recently progressed from searching for street names within a region to searching all of NZ. However the process has not been perfected so the best method is simply to skip the City name. To find a street, go Where To > Address > NZ > Search All > Done (no house number required) > start typing the street name, 4-5 letters will do > Done. Matching streets are listed alphabetically.

    * The Open Project maps are not street number calibrated yet - that is some way off. The only way to get street numbers on a Garmin at present is to get the Garmin City Navigator CD.

    * NZ map, with the "Global" (all of NZ) street search and all NZ POI is from here: http://www.gwprojects.org/public/Lat...xing%20Mapsets

    * When you find an error in the NZ Open Project map, please report it on the user forum in the appropriate region on the NZ Maps section: http://gwprojects.org/forum The maps are updated every few days.

    * Applicable to nuvi and zumo only: Another way to find streets (I use it as it sorts by distance from you rather than alphabetically like the previous method) is to use the Street POI (Points of Interest). To do this: Where To > down arrow > Extras > Custom POIs > start spelling, no need to wait for the hourglass. Matching names are shown by distance. Interesting to watch an unsorted list recompile as you travel - it updates every 30 seconds or so - showing direction and distance to each street.

    * Street POIs are from these files: http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6937#6937 which is easily combined into one .csv file of 66,171 street names and loaded with the Garmin POI Loader (free from the Garmin site). To avoid ugly grey POI dots on the streets, follow the advice given here "Grey dots on street POIs": http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3209#3209

    * When loading maps to a SD card, use the PC slot as this is much quicker than the slow (old type) USB connection to Garmin GPS units

    * You can simulate being anywhere (next door or next continent) and practice the auto-routing by turning the GPS receiver part of the zumo off: Spanner > System > GPS Mode >GPS Off.

Then back out and go to the normal map page. Tap the map briefly to turn on the drag function. Immediately touch and drag the map to where you'd rather be (use the zoom in and out as well to make it easier to go greater distances). Zoom in to the desired location and tap on the road or near to it. Then tap Set Location. The zumo will then behave as though it was there and will simulate an auto-route when told where to go. You can search for the nearest fuel for example and choose from the resulting list, then watch a simulated route.

I tested a zumo (it had Europe maps loaded)for Sicily to Scotland - it crunched away for a little while and worked it out.
