Takaka Hill (21 March)

I remember many times being sent to the pub in my jammies to get the old man and ending up at the end of the bar with a bag of chips and a lemonade while the phone rang on unanswered..........many cold tea's because of that place.

Haaa .. Wow that would have been so great. A cold dinner would have been a small price to pay for such an adventure!!

Yeah good old days of my dogs better than yours, high country muster talk, how many hp the next tractor will need to tow the feedout wagon. Fights in the carpark when rival rugby teams meet up for a quick one before heading over the hill in the bus. It was just "one of those pubs" and some crazy cow burned it down out of spite.

yep.. sure do!! any direction we go in we get a great ride. Theres, over the Whangamoas to Queen Charlotte Drive & round to Picton... or over the Hope Saddle to Murchison, then back through Nelson Lakes... or over the Takaka Hill.. sigh.. decisions decisions... wonderful boot scraping hills whichever way ya go!!!

The owners wife burnt the place down after a scrap.....bitch. I have two things to remember it by. A jar of ashes and the CD sign (2 mtrs x 2 mtrs) off the fence. I went up the weekend after it burned down with a mate who grew up in Takaka and drank a beer in the ashes and had a wizz in the urinal which was still there.

is that what happened to it... I never did hear!! Bugger aye!! it was a great institution for Upper Takaka for sure!!! Many a biker was heard to say.. "beer @ the Rat Trap?" to mates! Great you have some momentos SR!!! & some funny memories!!! How come they never rebuilt it??? oh, because it was 'arson'.. they wouldn't have had insurance would they...??!!??

It was a two story place with veranders running around both stories and a huge "RAT TRAP" in white painted on its green roof you could read as you drove down the hill.

Oh the memories! The sight of that roof from the Hill mean't only one thing- I'm stopping for a bevvie. Or 2 or 3 or 4. We were soooo responnnnsible then, eh?

here's the same tyre.. bloody near ferked now!! but I'm buggered if I know how you run your's OFF the edge of the tread.. leaving pit marks on the SIDE of the tyre wall!!!

The lock-up when you disappeared from sight trying to chase me down the hill wondered where the fark ya got to until i saw your lights roll around a bend a few behind me, then what you told me later

That tread is all paid for so you may as well use the whole lot nothing worse than only using half of what ya pay for
I'm buggered if i know how I managed getting those marks on the sidewalls either

Yep.. wicked views alright... but ya gotta watch out for them rock hoppers.. from what I hear, they have very sharp teeth...

As you come of the Takaka hill the first house you come to on the left is on the Ratty site, It was moved from the hydro village to there a year after it was torched. The booze licience was transfered down the road to the community hall and renamed "the club" a good quiet place for a drink in the evening.

It was a two story place with veranders running around both stories and a huge "RAT TRAP" in white painted on its green roof you could read as you drove down the hill.

My dad grew up in Upper Takaka, before moving up to Wellington, so have spent a fair amount of time in Motueka/Takaka region. IOne of my Dad's best friend (Dave Harward) owns the house literally 50 m (if that) from the club (which is still referred to by some locals as the RatTrap incidentally). I myself have spent a few good nights at the pub there and had a great time. Such nice people around that area. I believe the roster for the bar rotates between locals (or at least it did last time I visited for a wedding down there). Love the area, and have only met awesome people down there.
