Its the reward system-rape a teen= get the top job.

That is a seriously fucked up system. A large number of the top brass must have turned a blind eye to the allegations over a 25 year period. A culture of silence indeed.

Hey 1 pack....................rape is not just limited to members of the Police. Police Officers are part of society with good and bad.

The other thing is that if these guys are off duty when they commit offences then why should it be a Police Bashing thing.....

Same as the military (I studied this sort of thing at uni) People still see you representing that part of society even when out of uniform to some extent. Your behaviour STILL needs to be above reporach. This is why military persons can still be charged for things like bringing their service into disrepute outside of working hours. I wont get into any other part of the arguments, but thats part of the reason their is such concern over these peoples behaviour even if it was outside of uniformed hours.

That's a tired old chestnut. One of the forces catch phrases for when good cops go bad, and it entirely inappropriate.

Motorcycle groups/gangs contain 'good and bad'. Perhaps we should contract policing duties to them?

And it took 25 years for the police to complete this process, suggesting either corruption or incompetence. Mean while the fucker has battled his way to the top, presumably while his colleague's looked the other way.

Or suggesting a lack of evidence perhaps?

Yep, his appointment process discussed the possible skeletons in his cupboard and the liklihood of it coming crashing down, but hey, he was to be the first Maori Commissioner.

Who ever steps into such a senior police role should be absolutely squeaky clean. Are you suggesting that they knew about the rape allegations but trusted his story that it was consensual?

The best candidate for the job was a person who admitted to group sex with a 16 year old? Not cool.

    Stinks of political expediency.

Absolutely squeaky clean... YEP... for sure...

Rape allegation that went nowhere..yep, they knew... and yep, they trusted his allegation that it was consentual, but what they didn't like was the possibility that the consent issue might come back and bite him, as it did...

Don't think he actually took part in group sex with a 16 year old, that was the other 2, or am I wrong?

Stinks of Political expediency? Dunno... PC perhaps?

Fair call about the 'political expediency' but to tar ALL cops as the same because of Rickards et al is kinda a tad harsh.

Like it would be if I caught an idiot on a Gixxer doing stupid stuff and then labelled ALL Suzuki riders as idiots........

Maybe Scummy. Its not just Rickards that causes the problems tho'
    Consider the mixed messages:

Follow a copper from Warkworth to Orewa, he accelerates to up to 130 in the wet and I can see him smiling in his rear mirror as I keep up, he waves good by at Orewa. Shortly after I get done for 111 on a straight road, brilliant sunshine not a soul around.

Get done at 147 [not complaining, my own fault] "hilton" takes my licence. A few months later I witness "hilton" riding at well over 100 in a 50 zone, tearing up and down the road like a fucking maniac.

My wife has a lot to do with the Police in her job, I hear plenty of 'drinking' stories that make my blood boil.

The N.Z Police force has a long way to go, a long way. Speeding tickets are related to quotas and revenue collection and make up a major part of road Policing, yet fucktards pull out on Motorcyclists everyday and apart from "watch out for motorcyclists" there is no drive to ticket this abhorrent crime that kills many of us every year.
Just how many tickets are given out each year for pulling out?

The system is totally fucked and should be privatised as should councils and many other Government departments. Laws are made and enforced to suit ministers and help build their power base, and that Scummy is the biggest crime of all.

Not true this year - no longer record tickets or even traffic time on time sheets, can't tell you how many tickets I've written out this last 8-10 months (not many) or how many for speed yet nobody has taken me to task about my lack of supposed 'quota'.

But never let facts ruin urban myth and get in the way of a good story.......
