News from Dom Jones in the US

Pete, Doms dad, just got this mail from him... Dom thought you guys might be interested in hearing how he is doing in the US.

Well its kinda been all pretty cruisy over here since I got over on the 20th of last month. I flew over to the eastside into Indianapolis and hanged out there for the first two weeks taking it easy and fiddling round with the same Suzuki GSXR 1000 that I rode last season. The weather was pretty bad with temp like -15 sometimes so I was happy to get the bike all sorted and trudge off for the first round of the AMA Superbike Championship down in the warmer climate of Florida.

I strolled up to Daytona hoping just to get through the weekend clean as funny things happen at Daytona and with my current little niggle, a tidy weekend would be a good weekend in my book. Points are points as we all know. I happened to qualify 27th on the grid and was feeling pretty happy just to get in the race as I was struggling a little with the track and set-up. Daytona is a unique track on the superbike calendar where for the last 15 seconds of each lap, you hold the throttle on the stop as you roll round the Nascar banking and down the front straight. The banking is the only highlight of the track as your tapped in 5th spinning the tyre round the bank. It feels pretty crazy at first as it feels like your more horizontal than vertical and running round the top of the banking, ya must be like 15 meters up looking down. But apart from that, the track is pretty boring with the infield full of stupid little corners that have no character or distinction so that kinda sucks.

Well qualifying was on Thursday and we got Friday off which was a nice break before racing on Saturday. On Friday, a group of us rocked off down to the beach to just a cruisy afternoon off and get a bit wet. Spring breaks just starting so it turned out to be pretty packed but all was good. The
highlight of the afternoon was kinda being rescued by a friendly female lifeguard. My pales and I were out in the surf just bumming round when this girl swam out to me asking if I was in trouble. She turned out to be a lifeguard and when I hadn't replied to her blowing the whistle to tell me to come in, she thought I was drowning. She said to come in as there was a bit of a rip so unlucky for me, I didn't try to drown and swam in to the safety of waist deep water, yay. It ended up there being like 4 patrol vehicles on the beach with sirens going with my mates dead with laughter on the beach and the rest of the beach pointing as a good old American knows how to.

So Friday turned out pretty good with that event ticked off the list of things to do.

Friday night was AMA Supercross so I went along and had a look seeing good old Kiwi in Ben Townley taking the win in the lites class which was pretty cool. The race on Saturday went pretty good as I ended up getting a good spot from 27th on the grid up to 15th after the first lap. I took it
pretty easy as I just wanted to get through the race uneventful. It ended up all good, going round and round for 15 laps to collect 19th which was kinda pleasing and put some points in the pocket for the championship.

I don't have to race until next month if I don't want so its recovery time at the moment for the old man. I'm hanging out in Florida for a couple more days and then hit the 4000km drive out to home in Southern California where I think some more of classic Dominic hard work will take place for the next couple of weeks. Hope all you guys are all good where ever you are.

    See ya
    Dom

Great to hear from Dom, I saw his result from Daytona.
I'm going to Barber next month, with a bit of luck I can hook up with him and have a chat. I'll take some pics
    Cheers

He is a pretty amazing young man.... firstly a genuinely nice guy, and secondly he underestimates his own talent at times.

But damn he is pretty fast on the track.... such a pity most of KB dont even know who he is, never mind what he is achieving.

Thanks for posting that Joni. Good to see that broken collar bone isn't buggering up his cunning plan for world DOMination. Gutted that I haven't had a chance to watch him ride, the depth of talent in the US must be huge, and to get 19th by 'just going round and round' says a lot about his skill.
