    Do they own the mountain?

Te Heuheu [sp?] was smart enough to realise the gubbinment was going to confiscate it, so instead gifted it to the gubbinment on the proviso it was to remain as a National Park.

Is that taniwha interbred with a tuna? Sure sounds mean.

Yellowfin Tuniwha. But probably doesn't taste bad.

Also something to do with the fact it is a World Heritage Park and you can not do man made alterations in a WHP....

How the hell did an interesting event like the Lahar turn into a group hug about the evils of Maori 'ownership' of a mountain?

    Managed risk!

Well, in the interests of consistency I have to say that the "owners", who ever they may be, Doc, the government and or the local Iwi, took a chance on managing the "risk" involved in the eventual Lahar's natural release and to their combined credit it "worked"!

Personally I thought they were bloody crazy not actively initiating an artificial "controlled" release.

    Obviously I was wrong!!

I have not heard of any reported unexpected damage to people or property as a result of the "natural" release, so I congratulate them all on a very satisfactory outcome, well done! Cheers John.

Its seems to slowly becoming a heath hazard/risk to all live close to it, and i think the rightful owners should be made to move it to a safer place like..oh i dunno...not our problem really is it...just move the fecken' thing....

Easily. Something only has to be enough of a problem for people to start talking about it everywhere.
