    Hey team

Anyone got any info on these things?

Or know where to get a workshop manual or if the engine is actually the same as an xr400 or whatever

Have just bought one and some maintenace issues need attending to

    Cheers

    Nice bike....

Yes, I believe it is based on an XR engine but while one is wet sumped the other is dry (can't remember which way around but I think the XR is dry?)

It is possible (with a shit load of mods) to fit an XR650 donk (Ok I saw a picture once) which would make it pretty interesting...

From memory you have to be anal about oil level on them or else bad things happen...

    Cheers

GB and XR are both dry-sump.
They are externally the same engine, but internally quite different. An XL/XR600 goes in easy, the 650 not so easy.
Not much else to say - typical Honda, goes nearly forever. Lots of stuff available, esp ex USA.
ACC - It's where the Enron accountants all went.

The GBs are sweet bikes, the 500 is better of course. They are based on the XR/XL as others say,the most popular dirt bike ever.GBs have a cult following and you should find heaps of support on the internet.XRs of that period had bad camshaft and rocker wear - the cure is synthetic oil and change it often,3000km on the road, check that cam chain too - hopefully you should hear it before it takes out the inlet valves.

Good choice of bike, they have a big following, just not on this board.

    A great machine

The GB400 TT is a great bike - got me back into biking in 1987. I had one of the less common dark blue metallic ones and put a full fairing on it made in Hamilton. I think that the fairing plug was a Yamaha RZ 350, adapted for the Honda.

Agree with Motu re the oil - I ran Mobil 1 4T Racing fully synthetic bike oil It's the same as Mobil 1 car oil minus one of the additive package chemicals, making it suitable for wet clutches. I sold it when it had nearly 40000 k's on the clock and the engine still sounded perfect.

I bought mine new and was told that a full manual was unavailable. Mine just had a little booklet which covered the cycle parts and a few specs like valve clearances and tyre pressures.

i still have my well used gb500 had it from new .it's has a hole in the rear tyre no chain, the sprockets are sitting on the wall, used it to go to work on for five years.has about 60,000km on it.best bike i have owned.I crashed it on piecoc hill rd and its been run over by a truck (just the rear tyre) after afall off on hutt motorway. When i start it up once or twice a year it blows a bit of smoke. The startermotor stopped working around 30,000k but it kick start easy.Stopped riding it in early 90's when the reg ran out.One day mite get it back on the road. The standard rear shocks are a joke so i replaced them will konis after the first two weeks.

Well thats one old magazine I can throw out. I was way off the mark. I'd still like one with a 600 / 650 motor though... Cor!

    Cheers guys

The bike is for the partner to ride - she loves it!

The list of online links does not seem to have gb stuff unfortunately

It is good to know the gb is closely related to the xr/xl - I must be able to find info on them that will help understand the gb

The bike is in pretty good condition

As you can see from the pics

Now we just need some good weather

    Lightbulb GB500/400

You could always join the yahoo list for GB500/400s. Although international, it tends to attract owners from the USA mainly. Masses of info in the archives.

I joined when my NZ GB400TT arrived in the UK last year (photo in the gallery section).

Some usefull links i've managed to find (some not so usefull and hard to understand!):

    http://lovik.tripod.com/Clubman.html
    http://www.thumperstuff.com/GB500.html
    http://www.amy.hi-ho.ne.jp/tachi/english/index_eng.html
    http://www.thumperpage.com/

I also managed to find a GB500TT service manual at the Library here in CHCH so they do exisit fo the 500 - they are basically identical.

    Hope this helps.
