Best high speed internet advise please???

I have a dial up 56k which is usually running at around 48kbps.
Im looking at the Broadband (jetstreram) offer promo from Telecom.
1/ What High Speed do you use
2/ How much space do you buy ( I see there are different plans based on how much you download)
3/ Are there any other alternatives?

    Cheers

We have the $70(or so) a month with 10gb download limit(which you will find hard to get near unless you download movies) at 256kb/s. and if we go over the 10gb then we don't pay extra but our speed goes down to real 56kb. which is faster than normal 56kb modem anyway

If you are not in a hurry to sign up wait a few months and by then your ISP will be able to charge you for the access rather than sign up with telecom. I just got this advise from my ISP as I will be needing broadband for the shop. My dailup connection is between 33 - 45k at present on the home computer. At the shop on the laptop I get between 53 - 54K but we need the line for bus bookings and faxes so I don't get to waste much time on this site.

    I dream of 48K!!!!
And there is no broadband where I live....
Apparently the Ihug system is good - download via satellite, upload via dial-up modem - as a compromise.

Saving $150 on a Jetstream hookup isn't to be sneezed at.

I've been happy enough with my overpriced 256Kbps home connection for the last few months. I'd just get one of the same, if I were you.

quasi, apparantly we are getting an exchange upgrade on our side of town in august sometime, so a wired full-speed solution would be VERY quick as you are about 300m from the exchange

I have this also. They say the speed will be throttled down if you go over 10GB, but I constantly use 25-35GB a month and it has never been restricted for me.

I use Jetstream, which usually works at around 256k, although can sometimes be much faster. I notice it slows up in the evenings, so obviously affected by load and local conditions. It costs around $70 a month. I'm quite happy with it as it's just so superior to what I had before. I can connect up my work laptop at home and work almost as quickly as I can at work on the LAN. So, no complaints from me about Jetstream, it's been reliable and generally bloody fast.
It's a hard road boy.......so try not to land on it.

What are you primarily using it for? Downloading pR0n? Just Email? 'Smurfing' the internet? VPN to work? Downloading Warez or Mp3's? DOS attacking your neighbour?
(If you don't understand the terms used, you probably don't do it!)

Get the cheapest service you can get away with - typically a 10GB download, 128kbps capped rate service will be more than adequate for a 'responsible' home user.

I base my business from home and a 256kbps service is more than adequate for my serious work (Email, Internet, RDP, VPN), as well as be shared with 2 other people. Can handle 3 players on line simultaneously for most games, although some get laggy if more than 2 of us are playing.
I would like more, but that would only encourage my flatmates to watch too much pR0n or suck my RDP bandwidth away pirating mp3s...

I wish I had at home what I have at work...100Mbps. Home runs between 52-52kbps, on an increasingly clapped piece of kit.

However is it true that Jetstream (ADSL) isn't truly "broadband"?

The 256k option a lot of us are using will probably give you the best value for money then. It won't give you blistering speed ofr your mp3 downloads, but will suit your other needs well.
Although full rate plans will get you download a lot of music faster, your excess data costs will blow out very quickly if you're not _very_ careful.
128k plans just don't cut the mustard anymore, but you will still find it worlds better than dial-up.

Only because they [Telecom] cap the rate. I can't remember the exact 'iso' figure the IT industry spouts as 'broadband', but 128k and 256k capped rates are below this figure. If you were on a full-rate plan, ie 5MB+, then yes, that is 'broadband'.
