    Where does this go..?

Wasn't sure where to put this one! Had a choice of General Bike, Cruisers, Rant and Rave or Jokes and Humour!

The weekend plans turned to custard somewhat and it became a bit of "What next?" I did manage a ride late Sat. arvo, though and the bike has now had its first service and running real sweet!

First problem arose while Mrs. Edbear was keeping eldest daughter and grandson company for the Fri. eve. while son-in-law attended the rugby with his mates. Daughter managed to get some Superglue in her eye and as it was 10pm and the local A&E was closed, the Missus rang to say she was taking her to the hospital. I said the van was low on fuel and she'd have to fill up which she said she'd do before leaving Takapuna.

She got home at about 1.30am complaining the van wasn't running right and she was afraid she wasn't going to get home! I'd just got the van back from Classic_Z's workshop and was scratching my head to think what could be wrong! Checked it out in the morning and it was definitely a sick puppy! Crawled into Tim's with blue smoke and chugging up the street, gpot out and cried to Tim, "I think my van's blowed up!" Had visions of blown turbo..!

Tim had a listen and agreed it was very unwell. Checked the air filter as we both thought it seemed somehow strangled. No prob there, so he checked fuel filter. As he removed the fuel line, he said, "Hang on, that's not diesel, that's petrol!" Now our van is a Nissan TD27 Turbo- intercooled diesel and definitely does not run on petrol! Rang the Missus and innocently asked if she'd gassed up as she was going to and she cheerfully replied, "Yes! Put $20 of 91 in!" I said, "Darling, it's a diesel!" She went quiet. "Oh, that's right, so it is!" I said, "The fuel cap says, 'Diesel', dear..." She replied, "Well, it was 1am, it was dark and I'm blond! What do you expect?" What could I say? Tim said just refill with diesel and you'll be fine in a couple of kays, which was true and the van is sweet again! (Have I mentioned Tim's a real good bloke?)

Daughter had to go back in to Auck. Hsp. for further check Sat. morn so we babysat grandson, (Loved that!), while they went. By the time we were free, wifey had a sore throat and headache, which she figures she got from work), so wasn't up to a ride late afternoon.

Took SH1 to Wellsford and back 16. Gotta go to work! Tell more later about the ride!

You need to put some 2 stroke in the tank for lubricy, the pertol can damage pumps and injectors through lack of lubrication.Injectors are the first to go because of the heat....you may not notice it,but the damage would be done.

    Yep,

I had the same thing happen to me at the shell station at waiuru. parked my pajero next to the diesel pump and ran for the boy's room. came back out and paid for the gas and drove off. made it as far as the first hill out of town and came to a grinding halt.

the inbred at the gas station manged to stretch the petrol nozzle right back to the gas tank and filled her full of 91 even though i was parked right next to the diesel pump.

got a tow back and drained the tank and refilled with diesel but the truck was never the same. had to get my pump overhauled because the seals were stuffed (cost me an arm and two legs) and sold it off not too long after that. that's why i never fill up at the shell station in waiuru.

Sounds like you'd have a strong case for a claim against the Station there!

I think mine will be okay, after all, $20 doesn't buy a lot of 91 and there was diesel in the tank to mix it with. Glad she didn't fill it up, for sure! Sometimes it's an advantage having a Scot for a wife...

The rest of the story isn't quite so interesting. Took SH1 to Wellsford and had it reinforced that the C50T is not really a sportsbike. Overtaking up past Wenderholm made lots of noise again as the left knob under the footboard ground away while passing cars! While I didn't cross the line, I think the oncoming car driver looked a little concerned at the sight... not sure what the drivers of the cars I passed thought of the noise and sparks as I was a little busy making sure I stayed in my lane and on the bike at the time...

Traffic was pretty good on the whole and made it to Wellsford in fairly quick time.

As I was turning left onto SH16 at the Caltex I noticed a tidy blue CB1300 pulling over to stop opposite and gave the couple a wave. They gave a friendly wave back and I carried on. Stopped just up the road to check my phone and as I was about to get going again an immaculate two-up Moto Guzzi Cali in black slowed down to pass, giving me the thumbs up, guess to see if I was okay. Followed them at a good pace until the Kaipara Lookout when I stopped to take pics. Those Cali's are a nice bike and handled sweet two-up from my following vantage point!

I was in cruise mode, though and was dawdling along looking for more photo spots when the couple on the CB1300 cruised past. We waved to each other and they gradually pulled ahead. I pulled in to a rest area to take more pics to find them there just taking their helmets off. Introduced ourselves and I got to meet Jafar and his new bride! They'd got married the week before and were returning from their honeymoon jaunt up North.

Had a good ol' chat and we headed off home.

The Boulevard proved perfect for this kind of ride, relaxed so that I was happy poodling along at 90km/h checking the scenery and looking for photo opportunities, yet enough grunt to easily pass slower traffic at will and cruise at any speed I fancied. Handled well with a bit of movement in bumpier corners, not uncomfortable, but enough to know you were testing the suspension. In a wierd way, I found the slight weave rather enjoyable! Go figure! It would be completely unacceptable on a sportsbike!

The vibes were no problem and not intrusive after the first service, so whatever they did it worked and there really was nothing I could criticise apart from having to adjust to the lack of groundclearance after being used to the GSX-F and casually barrelling into corners at somewhat above the advisory signs. Still, now both left and right warning knobs are even again...

Lookin' forward to LOTS more riding!

Nice pic mate, bike looks great! That story was classic! I knew a cop once who chucked Petrol in a diesel paddy wagon..... what a twat.

I'll give you a wave if I see you around. I tend to flick around the SH16, SH1 loop when I get the time to go for a short ride. Some good spots off SH1 further north too.

Being next to a service station we see it as a daily occourance - from both sides, but more often it's the customer who puts it in,and then tries to blame the pump jockey. Then we have to drain the tank and dispose of the contaminated fuel. But now there is Suckymoto - I just give them a Suckymoto card and say it will cost them $150.They get even more upset then, but some people only learn the hard way.

Good write up Edbear, sounds like your ride was fun even if the weekend was a doozy. Don't the fuel fillers of Diesels have a different aperture size too? Supposed to make it bloody hard to do that stuff isn't it?
    Good luck anyway

Not in my van, you could stick anything in there... Yeah I had fun, but hopefully the Missus can come out to play next time.

thats what my co worker used to say...the hole in the diesel vehicles are smaller than the petrol pumps. somehow, with diesel having the smaller hole, he managed to fuck up twice in two months. ive done it twice in over a year. lol. have caught a guy with a concrete mixer putting 95 in it...got to him just in time [30cents]

a better idea would be to have a different shape on the end of each nozzle... say, a triangle, square etc. then the wrong nozzles wouldnt be able to fit.
