    Pigs and guns

Umm...as I now qualify as "living in the sticks" I guess I should buy a gun or something :-). Acutally, I'd like one of them crossbow thingies...do I need a license or will they let crazy immigrants buy one off the shelf here?

Also, we're after a couple of pigs to fatten up and umm...eat. Any other bumpkins with advice on this would be appreciated.

This country is fuggin mad BTW, lovin it.

Get a gun licence and get a gun (even a 22)

A crossbow is too slow to reload and runs out of range too quick.

And is an awkward handful in the bush when hunting.

Hunting? Hmm..hadn't thought of that. I was just thinking about some @4cker breaking in or trying to steal livestock. Guns have to be locked up don't they whereas a crossbow could be left attached to the wall? Putting a crossbow bolt through a burglar's bollocks would be most satisfying. Might scare off some of my more annoying customers too

Okay, coming from somebody with experiance in both, no license required for a bow of any form. But, to get a nice hunting rig your looking at at least 1500 bucks up to 10s of thousands. Mine set me back about 5 grand 4 years ago. Its pulling 70 odd pounds, and with the arrows that I use thats enough to bowl over anyhing in NZ. More skill and practice is required to become accurate, and you need to tune your bow to you. my arrows are $25 a pop too so it gets expensive when you lose them or split shafts by shooting one arrow with another (yes its possible, its on my wall)

A nice rifle is probably cheaper in the long run, license is require 2 referees, must be related to 1 and do a 1 night course and test. vetting takes a few months. See the arms office at your local cop shop for more info and costs.

Too bad you can't actually do anything like that anymore since you've just posted what you've posted. Try saying you were shit scared for your life in front of the court after that.

Yeah, scracha - nix with the "gonna shoot burglars in the nuts".

You probably are, but the nice man at the police station will explain to you when you start your firearms licence application process that the current state of NZ law is such that owning weapons for self-defence purposes is not legitimate.

By all means buy a nice collection of guns and include in it an 18" 12-gauge pump that may or may not generally be somewhat more accessible in the home than your other, securely-stored, weapons, but you gotta learn to keep repeating the "I'm-a go hunting" PC mantra.

Anyway, you do realise that shooting a burglar when he's not actually posing a violent threat to you or your family will probably land you in jail in just about any jurisdiction worldwide, don't you?

Even in US states that support the "castle doctrine" of home defence, one still can't go apeshit on intruders with firearms. I quote from the relevant Wikipedia page:

The law still requires citizens to articulate the ability, opportunity and intent of an attacker to do grave bodily harm to a person exercising his or her right to self-defense.

So you can't go killin' a man because he stole your bike.

Anything that uses gunpowder to fire the projectile you need a fire arm license. Airguns, Crossbow, and long or compound bows no license is required (at this stage) but you must be at 18 and the seller should be asking for id etc...

Crossbow hunting is an art and a skill... and a lot of fun I prefer cross bow hunting than using a riffle... Riffle hunting is well... boring

12 gauge solid... shoot 'em up the arse (with the gun Dover...) and you'll have it killed, cleaned and ready for the BBQ all in about 2 1/3 seconds.

Don't do it near the house, and try to avoid wearing a suit and tie at the time.

Get your firearms licence first, then join the NZ Deerstalker's Assocation. Your local branch will arrange monthly hunts that you can go along on.

If you're ever dead crazy keen and visiting up around Dargaville, PM me and I'll take you out to harvest a few of the local four-legged eco-terrorists.

Right on most counts I had a crossbow for a few years to hunt in our company forests. Range wasn't a factor in dense bush but the "tangle factor" made it virtually unusable. The stopping power of the 3 blade bolts I used was amply demonstrated by one accidentally passing through 20mm ply cladding at a garage on a previous property. Fortunately, it missed the contents . After that incident, it sat in a cupboard for years and was then sold off!

No noise with a crossbow and you have only one shot. Nothing like the bang of a shotgun as a warning shot. It's gets everbodys attention..........instantly. But understand this if you approach with a loaded weapon you had better be prepared to use it...........other wise stay in bed untill all have gone and ring the cops.
