    Guns and pigs.

    Howdy,

My mates 21'st is coming up. I want to get a pig/sheep/lamb on the spit, but im a bit tight for cash and don't know where to get one from? Anyone know where to get some spit food from?

Also a few of my mates and I are going to chip in and get him a new rifle, on the sly I found out he is looking at replacing his old 22. Hes a doc worker so this is one of his most used rifles at around 500 rounds a fortnight. I think he'd enjoy a real quite one for his urban "jobs" and it has to be of top quaility, the best. Unfortunatly I do not know shit about guns (im a townie ) so anyone got any tips on certain rifles and silencers that are great?

    Cheers

Most centres have places that cater for this exact thing, but can be many $$$$.

Hirepool used to have spit roasters, check your local butcher for a deal on meat, sorted...

    Mmmmmm..... donuts.....

Go and talk to a good butcher. I can't recall what I paid for the last one, but it wasn't bad. Last couple we have done, I got a boned out beastie - like a big rolled roast. No bones and much easier to deal with.

Put down alufoil in the bottom if it is an enclosed spit. Makes cleaning easier. Rub on oil regularly while cooking, and stuff the stomach cavity with herbs (rosemary - not THAT herb!). Rub on garlic

Trick we did once that worked well - put a chicken on the bar inside the stomach cavity so it cooked at the same time. It was yummy.

BTW I made a spit if anyone needds to borrow one. If I could get everyone to pay up and get the numbers I would do a KB BBQ towards xmas...

As to the pig I have no idea. Speaking to a good butcher sounds about the best.

The .22 is a little more involved.

Does your mate want a bolt or a semi auto?

500 rounds a fortnight is a lot of shooting.

Check out the gunshops. If you are in Auckland talk to Eric at Serious Shooters in Penrose. Very knowledgeable. He will set you right as he believes in assisting a person to get the correct rifle for them rather than the one that gets him more commision.

You will need someone with a firearms licence to buy the rifle and hold it til it is presented to your mate who, i assume, has a licence already.

Silencers or more correctly suppressors are another matter. The cheap one just do the job but as an example I was looking at one for a .22 pistol the other day ( same as rifle) and it was $200. Worked very well with subsonic ammo.

A ruger 10/22 might be the go, semi auto 10 shot. Nice rifle but you get what you pay for, look at spending 600-1000 for one of those new. otherwise have a look at your local gun store.

Dude, plenty of wild pigs to hunt! Otherwise, maybe a farmer somewhere can hook you up with a couple for home kills nice cheap?

Also, I hope that you have put two and two together...you are buying your mate a new rifle...you need meat for a BBQ...let the trigger do the talking while you do the stalking!

There's an art to spit-roasting a whole carcass. Ring the Spit Roast Company, and there's a commercial catering business in Thames that hires the necessary gear (with instructions) or could set up and cater the whole gig for you.

Talk to a couple of local farmers, if you are handy with a knife then kill, skin and clean it yourself, last lamb I bought cost about $50 on the hoof, pigs can be cheap too.
Just make sure you know what you are doing or you can make a right bloody mess of it and spoil the meat as well.
