Nasty & the Grub might be there. A bit of a quandry though ... what an awesome ride it would be but we would probably have to bring the car because the Nasty likes to camp in style. We'd need to buy a Goldwing, strip all the metal offit and then screw all the camping gear on to be able to get it there on two wheels

Now the hot pools could be an interesting ride. They're at Morere and there's a road from Kopuawhara over the hill to get there http://www.smaps.co.nz/nz/wairoa/mahia/tunanui+road/. I did it once int he car, can't remember if it was sealed ... all I remember is that it was covered in leaves so nobody else had been there for days it seemed

I have a funny feeling that road is no longer Grub. I'll ask my mum next time I talk to her. We did it once years ago when I was a naughty teenager who was avoiding the guys in blue and if I remember rightly there were at least a few patches of gravel, but would be an interesting road, never got a lot of use.

The hot pools are still there though...
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

The road over the hill was basically gravel all the way last time I went over it 3 years ago and I presume its still there in much the same condition. Some logging was going on then with the trucks chopping it up but of course it was fun on the dirt bike. It is a narrow road which was interesting when I took the car through it.

Me and my Bro' had an extended adventure bike weekend there 3 years ago staying at the camp in its final season, but alas it is no more. I posted that weekend ride story here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=3047

I didn't post all the pics at the time so somewhere I will have pics of the road over the hill if I get around to hunting them out - fantastic views from that road if I remember rightly.
    Cheers

Spoke to mother dearest a few weeks ago and she said it's still in use and still gravel. She also mentioned Doneraile Park would be a good day ride, with a fun road to ride, sealed the whole way. There's also the ride out to Lake Waikaremoana for those who enjoy a bit of gravel riding, and a beautiful spot.

Love the ride out onto Mahia Peninsula itself. Where is farmachick these days, she only did 2 posts and disappeared, you still out there?

Railway stuff again too, an old wagon way out in the middle of nowhere.

Col get yourself a trail bike before you go to Mahia and you can double your pleasure.

Hey cool. Wises.co.nz reckons 492kms from Auckland to Mahia (and 475kms from Wellington to Mahia, you're right about being central). I know I'm a youngster, but might there be room for me somewhere? Maybe by next year I'll be in a good enough time and money situation to be able to do something like this.

    Wicked idea.
